English Department Begins March Madness
In celebration of March Madness, the BW English Department is asking students to participate in a game of brackets to select their favorite Young Adult literature. Each week in March, students can vote for their favorite books by visiting this link. Every student who participates will be entered in a drawing, with the prize winners announced at the end of the month. The deadline for the first week of voting is Friday, March 6.
BW English Department Announces New Scholarship
This year, the BW English Department will present the school’s first English scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a college degree in an English-related field of study. (Qualifying fields include English, English or language arts education, journalism, communication, etc.)
The scholarship recipient will be selected based on his/her grades in English courses at Belleville West and on his/her written responses to two essay questions.
The scholarship application is available online here. Applications are due to the Belleville West counseling office no later than Tuesday, March 31.
Student Journalists Bring Home Awards
Staff members of the Hy News, the BW student newspaper, and the Bellevinois, the BW yearbook, attended the annual Southern Illinois School Press Association (SISPA) contest at SIU-Carbondale on Thursday, February 26.
The Hy News received the Blue Banner Newspaper Award for overall excellence. The newspaper also won second place in the Overall Layout category.

Deadline for BW Literary Magazine is this Friday
Page One, the Belleville West literary and art magazine, is accepting student submissions through this FRIDAY. The magazine accepts submissions of original poetry, short fiction, essays, drama, photography, and art. Work must be submitted via email to pageone@bths201.org.
The rules for submission are as follows:
1. Each student may submit up to three pieces in any one genre (prose, poetry, and art).
2. The student must send a separate email for each submission.
3. The subject line of the email should include “Page One Submission” and the genre.
4. The body of the email should include:
The student name
The title of the piece (each piece must have a title)
The medium (photograph, charcoal, acrylic, etc.) if it is an art entry
5. The submission should be attached to the email as a document or file.
6. The student must not place his/her name on the submission itself.
By submitting work to Page One, the student is granting permission for the work to be published in the school magazine. The student agrees to the following:
1. The submitted piece of writing or art is his/her own original work.
2. Page One reserves the right to edit the piece for content or length.
3. Page One does not have space to publish every piece that it receives.
Any student of Belleville West High School is eligible to submit work to Page One. Students may submit work no later than this Friday, February 27.
BW Speech Team Takes Sixth at State
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team concluded another successful season with a trip to the IHSA State Tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 20 and 21. The team qualified twelve events for the state tournament; of those, five events advanced to the championship round. The team claimed sixth place overall in the state.
Individual awards went to:

Tyler Herron – second place in Original Comedy
Bethany Dain – fifth place in Extemporaneous Speaking
Sam Geiger – fifth place in Original Oratory

Vote for the 2015 Abe Lincoln Book
Belleville West High School students who have read four or more of the Abe Lincoln book nominees are eligible to vote in the 2015 book selection.
The Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Book Award is awarded annually to the author of the book voted as most outstanding by participating students in grades nine through twelve in Illinois. The award is named for Abraham Lincoln, one of Illinois’ most famous residents and himself an avid reader and noted author. The award is sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA). The Abraham Lincoln Award is designed to encourage high school students to read for personal satisfaction and become familiar with authors of young adult and adult books.
To vote, students can stop in the BW Library or visit the BW Library site. The deadline for voting is Saturday, February 28.

Harambee Hosts Annual Soul Food Day
Belleville West Harambee sponsors “A Taste of Soul,” its annual Soul Food Day, this Friday. Students can purchase a taste of various soul foods for 25 cents each. Wings will be available for 50 cents to a dollar. Belleville West students can experience “A Taste of Soul” during all lunch hours on Friday, February 20.

Belleville West reads! The BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read one million pages of pleasure reading during this school year. At the end of the fourth triad, each class is more than 80% of the way to the goal!
At the end of the fourth triad, the SOPHOMORE CLASS has reclaimed the top spot, with 908,974 pages of pleasure reading. (The sophomore class read 240,147 pages during the fourth triad—an average of 443 pages per sophomore.) These sophomore classes read the most pages during the fourth triad:

BW Chess Team Impresses at State Tourney
On February 13 and 14, the Belleville West Chess Team competed in the IHSA State Tournament. In a field of more than 145 teams, Belleville West finished at 29 (moving up more than 70 spots from their placement in the 2014 tournament). The team is coached by English teacher Mr. Lucas Spriggs.
