Book Club Plans for First Discussion in Early October
The Belleville West Book Club will meet after school in the BW Library on Wednesday, October 4, for the first discussion of the year. The group will discuss Kai Harris’s novel What the Fireflies Knew. Any Belleville West student is welcome to participate. Copies of the book are available for check-out at the circulation desk in the Belleville West Library.
What the Fireflies Knew by Kai Harris
After her father dies and the debts incurred from his addiction cause the loss of the family home, KB and her teenage sister are sent by their overwhelmed mother to live with their estranged grandfather. Over the course of a single sweltering summer, KB attempts to navigate a world that has been turned upside down. Her father has been labeled a fiend. Her mother’s smile no longer reaches her eyes. Her sister, once her best friend, now feels like a stranger. Her grandfather is grumpy and silent. The white kids who live across the street are friendly, but only sometimes. And they’re all keeping secrets. As KB vacillates between resentment, abandonment, and loneliness, she is forced to carve out a different identity for herself and find her own voice.
Little Theatre Opens 2024-2025 Season This Weekend
The Belleville West Little Theatre will present its annual fall play on Thursday through Saturday, October 3 through 5. This year’s production is the drama The Giver.
Jonas (senior Theo Rickert) lives in a perfect world. Everything is under control and safe. There is no war or fear or pain. There are also no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the community.
But when Jonas turns 12, he is chosen for special training from The Giver (senior Eric Perschbacher)—to receive and keep the memories of the community. The Giver is the only person who holds the memories of real pain and real joy. Now Jonas will learn the truth about life—and the hypocrisy of his utopian world.
Through this astonishing and moving adaptation, discover what it means to grow up, to grow wise, and to take control of your own destiny.
The Giver was written by Eric Coble. It was adapted from the best-selling young adult novel by Lois Lowry.
The production is directed by Mr. John Lodle and Mr. Jamie Klein. The student directors are seniors Jeremiah Eichholz, Natalie Hall, Theo Rickert, and Jordyn Struense. The student technical directors are seniors Megan Groom, Melaina Robison, Allison Sheldon, Abby Siegel, and junior Izy Austin.
Performances are at 7:00 each evening in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center, located at 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West. Tickets are $7 for students and $10 for adults. Advance tickets are available at this link.

Auditions for Freshman-Sophomore Show Set for Next Monday
Auditions for the freshman-sophomore play, Reel Times at Somerset High, will be held next Monday, September 23, at 3:30 in room A111 (the choir room). Only freshmen and sophomores are eligible to audition for this show, so it’s an excellent opportunity for the underclassmen to shine. Students do not need to prepare anything in advance, and no prior experience is necessary.
