West Student Advances to International Level of Speaking Contest
Congratulations to Belleville West senior Maria Raza! On Saturday, April 29, she won the district level of the Optimist Oratory Contest. She now advances to compete in the international contest–the highest level–in St. Louis in July.
Five BW Seniors Earn State Writing Awards
In the annual IATE (Illinois Association of Teachers of English) student poetry and prose contest, five Belleville West seniors won awards: Jerry Aplin (first place), Maria Raza (first place), Liz Stock (runner up), Jake Moreland (honorable mention), and Lucille Wilson (honorable mention). Their writing will be recognized in the next issue of the Illinois English Bulletin.
NEHS Inducts Students from the Class of 2023
On May 11, the Belleville West chapter of the National English Honor Society inducted 34 students, listed below, into the group. In order to qualify for the BW chapter of the National English Honor Society, students must maintain a 3.5 grade point average in English classes and participate in English-related service projects (such as the holiday book drive and the Shakespeare festival). Belleville West Students Celebrate a Year of Reading
The Belleville West English Department and Belleville West Library hosted the annual Reading Celebration Day last Thursday, May 11. The celebration included a breakfast for top readers, book chats, author presentations, a drawing for autographed books and e-readers, a book swap, word games, reading time, and distribution of new books for summer reading.
Literature Students Present Living Museum for English Classes
Last Friday, students in the African American Literature elective shared presentations on Black authors. Featured authors included W.E.B. Du Bois, Brandy Colbert, Yaa Gyasi, Jason Reynolds, Angie Thomas, and Ida B. Wells. The course is co-taught by Ms. Carnetta Chalmers and Dr. Soune Ursani.
Thespian Troupe Welcomes New Members
At the conclusion of the spring musical on April 29, Belleville West Thespian Troupe #369 welcomed sixteen new members. Each of these students has invested hundreds of hours in the theatre program at Belleville West, with at least 150 of those hours dedicated to work behind the scenes.
Congratulations to sophomores Quin Brown, Natalie Hall, Teddi Lacey, Lukas Pellmen, Eric Perschbacher, Sofia Price, Allison Sheldon, and Sean Teutrine; to juniors Ravi Douglas, Lizzy Schauster, and Abby Showmaker; and to seniors William Bazar, Brock Becker, Charlie Givens, Wini James, and Lucy Wilson.
English Department Presents Annual Scholarship
The BW English Department presented the Laurie M. Bielong English Scholarship on Monday, May 8. The scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a college degree in an English-related field of study. This year’s recipient is Sage Pratt, who plans to attend Blackburn College and pursue a career in education.
Students Meet Author through BW Virtual Visit
Belleville West students participated in a virtual visit with author Brandy Colbert on Wednesday, May 10. Colbert—the author of the young adult novels Pointe, Little and Lion, Finding Yvonne, The Revolution of Birdie Randolph, and The Voting Booth—spoke with students about her life as a writer, her YA novels, and her non-fiction book Black Birds in the Sky. Several Belleville West students also had the opportunity to ask questions during the visit.
2022-2023 Literary and Art Magazine Now on Sale
The 2022-2023 edition of Page One, the Belleville West literary and art magazine, is on sale today during lunch hours in the cafeteria. The full-color magazine is available at the yearbook table for just $3.
Belleville West Celebrates Reading
The Belleville West English Department holds its annual Reading Celebration Day this Thursday, May 11. The festivities include a breakfast (sponsored by the BW Library) for top readers, drawings for new books and e-readers, time for pleasure reading, reading-related games, and the induction of new National English Honor Society members.
