Speech Team Takes Sectional Title
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team took first place at the IHSA Sectional Tournament at Normal West High School on Saturday, February 14. The following students, who won individual awards, qualified for the state competition next weekend:
Bethany Dain — first place in Informative Speaking
Sam Geiger — first place in Original Oratory
Donnie Bland and Henry Holm — second place in Humorous Duet Acting
Bethany Dain — second place in Extemporaneous Speaking
Sam Geiger — second place in Radio Speaking
Tyler Herron — second place in Humorous Interpretation
Tyler Herron — second place in Original Comedy
Donnie Bland — third place in Special Occasion Speaking
Bailey Guinn — third place in Dramatic Interpretation
Henry Holm and Tiffani Volkman — third place in Dramatic Duet Acting
Brooke Ingram — third place in Oratorical Declamation
In addition, the members of the Performance in the Round group took second place in their event, also qualifying for the state tournament. The team is coached by Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, Ms. Julie Schloesser, and Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger.
Harambee Performs for Packed House
The Belleville West Harambee Club performed their 2015 show, “Still I Rise,” before a sold-out house in the Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, February 11. This year’s performance, a tribute to Maya Angelou, included praise dancing, poetry recitation, choral numbers, rap performances, hip-hop dancing, and the Harambee steppers.
Harambee will host its annual Soul Food Day next Friday, February 20, in the BW cafeteria. Members of the group will also share their show with grade school students in March.
The Harambee group is sponsored by Ms. Carnetta Chalmers (who founded the group in 1997 with retired BW counselor Ms. Audrey Smith). Other sponsors are Ms. Megan Hoelscher, Mr. Ken Jones, Mr. John LeCuyer, Ms. Jennifer Sage, and Mrs. Michelle Washburn.
Harambee Presents Tribute to Maya Angelou
Harambee, the Belleville West multicultural organization, will present its annual show for Black History Month this Wednesday, February 11. This year’s show, Still I Rise, is a tribute to author and activist Maya Angelou. The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and children, and $5 for senior citizens.
Speech Team Wins Regional Title
At the IHSA Carbondale Regional on Saturday, February 7, the Belleville West Speech and Acting Team took first place. Individual awards went to the following students, who will advance to next weekend’s IHSA Sectional Tournament:

Auditions for Spring Musical Announced
Auditions for the 2015 Belleville West musical, Cabaret, will be held on Tuesday, February 17, from 3:45-6:00 p.m. in room A111. Audition packets are available in rooms A111, B236, and B327. A workshop covering dance and musical numbers for the audition will be held on Friday, February 6, from 3:45-5:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Students in all grade levels are welcome to audition.
Page One Invites Student Submissions
Page One, the Belleville West literary and art magazine, is currently accepting student submissions for the 2014-2015 edition. The magazine accepts submissions of original poetry, short fiction, essays, drama, photography, and art. Work must be submitted via email to pageone@bths201.org.
The rules for submission are as follows:
1. Each student may submit up to three pieces in any one genre (prose, poetry, and art).
2. The student must send a separate email for each submission.
3. The subject line of the email should include “Page One Submission” and the genre.
4. The body of the email should include:
The student name
The title of the piece (each piece must have a title)
The medium (photograph, charcoal, acrylic, etc.) if it is an art entry
5. The submission should be attached to the email as a document or file.
6. The student must not place his/her name on the submission itself.
By submitting work to Page One, the student is granting permission for the work to be published in the school magazine. The student agrees to the following:
1. The submitted piece of writing or art is his/her own original work.
2. Page One reserves the right to edit the piece for content or length.
3. Page One does not have space to publish every piece that it receives.
Any student of Belleville West High School is eligible to submit work to Page One. The deadline for this year’s submissions is Friday, February 27.
BW Library and Lit Magazine Host Poetry Slam
Do you write poetry, song lyrics, or short stories? The Belleville West Poetry Slam is an opportunity to share your work—or to listen to the writing of other students.
The slam will be held in the BW Library on Friday, February 6, during all lunch hours. The library will offer 50% off all hot beverages from the café during the slam.
Students from all grades are welcome to participate. Any student who needs a pass from study hall to attend the slam should stop in the BW Library by Wednesday, February 4.
Speech Team Members Earn Additional Accolades
At the conclusion of the speech and acting season, the Egyptian Forensics League (the speech league of Southern Illinois) recognizes the top 25 individual performers from among more than 200 students in the region. This year, West students dominated the league with 13 students in the top 25.
Congratulations to senior Bethany Dain, who took the top spot in the league. Congratulations to senior Tyler Herron and junior Sam Geiger, who tied for second place in the leauge (just one point behind Bethany Dain). Other students who finished in the top 25 are juniors Donnie Bland, Henry Holm, Brooke Ingram, Bailey Guinn, Nathan Hirst, and Romeo Spells; sophomores Janae Robinson, Jordan Thompson, and Tiffani Volkman; and freshman Cassidy Farrar.

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to Belleville West
Belleville West Little Theatre presents the 2015 children’s play, The Wizard of Oz. The story of Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, the Cowardly Lion, and the Wicked Witch of the West, this is a special children’s version of the beloved musical. Performances are Tuesday, January 27, and Wednesday, January 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. (Please note the change to previously announced dates.)
