Auditions for Spring Musical Set for Next Week
Auditions for the 2016 Belleville West musical, Anything Goes, will be held next Tuesday, February 16, after school in room A111. Students in all grade levels are encouraged to audition for the show, which features such Cole Porter standards as “It’s De-Lovely,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “Anything Goes,” and “You’re the Top.” Audition packets are available in room B236, room B327, and room A111.
Harambee Highlights African-American Contributions to Broadway
The Belleville West Harambee Club presented their 2016 show, “Harambee on Broadway,” in the Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, February 10. This year’s show—a tribute to African-American playwrights, actors, singers, and dancers—included performances from Porgy and Bess, A Raisin in the Sun, The Piano Lesson, Hairspray, The Color Purple, Dreamgirls, The Lion King, and The Wiz.
Harambee will host its annual Soul Food Day next Friday, February 19, in the BW cafeteria. Members of the group will also share their show with grade school students in March.
The Harambee group is sponsored by Ms. Carnetta Chalmers, who founded the group in 1997 with retired BW counselor Ms. Audrey Smith. Other sponsors are Ms. Megan Hoelscher, Mr. Ken Jones, and Ms. Jennifer Sage.
Lit Magazine and Library Sponsor Poetry Cafe
Do you write poetry? Song lyrics? Short stories? Page One (the BW literary magazine) and the Belleville West Library invite students to a Poetry Cafe on Friday, February 12. Students can express themselves by sharing their words with others. Or students can attend to listen and sip some cappuccino. The Poetry Cafe will take place during all lunch hours and will feature 50% off hot drinks. Any student who needs a blue pass from study hall can stop at the library on Wednesday, February 10, to reserve a pass.
Harambee Presents Annual Show for Black History Month
Harambee, the Belleville West multicultural organization, will present its annual show for Black History Month this Wednesday, February 10. This year’s show, Harambee on Broadway, is a tribute to African-American playwrights and performers. The Harambee show will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students and children, and $5 for senior citizens.
BW Speech Team Takes Regional Title
At the IHSA Chatham Regional on Saturday, February 6, the Belleville West Speech and Acting Team took first place. Individual awards went to the following students, who will advance to next weekend’s IHSA Sectional Tournament:
Wade Cook and Cassidy Farrar – first place in Dramatic Duet Acting
Sam Geiger – first place in Informative Speaking
Sam Geiger – first place in Original Oratory
Bailey Guinn – first place in Poetry Reading
Nathan Hirst and Janae Robinson – first place in Humorous Duet Acting
Brooke Ingram – first place in Special Occasion Speaking
Janae Robison – first place in Original Comedy
Romeo Spells – first place in Oratorical Declamation
Cassidy Farrar – second place in Radio Speaking
Bailey Guinn – second place in Dramatic Interpretation
Henry Holm – second place in Prose Reading
Brooke Ingram – second place in Humorous Interpretation
Alan Estrada – fourth place in Extemporaneous Speaking
Mikayla Scott – fourth place in Impromptu Speaking
In addition, the Performance in the Round group won the regional title in that event. The speech team is coached by Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, Ms. Julie Schloesser, and Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger.
BW Literary Magazine Invites Student Submissions
Page One, the Belleville West literary and art magazine, is currently accepting student submissions for the 2015-2016 edition. The magazine accepts submissions of original poetry, short fiction, essays, drama, photography, and art. Work must be submitted via email to pageone@bths201.org.
The rules for submission are as follows:
1. Each student may submit up to three pieces in any one genre (prose, poetry, and art).
2. The student must send a separate email for each submission.
3. The subject line of the email should include “Page One Submission” and the genre.
4. The body of the email should include:
The student name
The title of the piece (each piece must have a title)
The medium (photograph, charcoal, acrylic, etc.) if it is an art entry
5. The submission should be attached to the email as a document or file.
6. The student must not place his/her name on the submission itself.
By submitting work to Page One, the student is granting permission for the work to be published in the school magazine. The student agrees to the following:
1. The submitted piece of writing or art is his/her own original work.
2. Page One reserves the right to edit the piece for content or length.
3. Page One does not have space to publish every piece that it receives.
Any student of Belleville West High School is eligible to submit work to Page One. The deadline for this year’s submissions is Friday, February 26.
Vote for the 2016 Abe Lincoln Book
Belleville West High School students who have read four or more of the Abe Lincoln book nominees are eligible to vote in the 2016 book selection.
The Abraham Lincoln Illinois High School Book Award is presented annually to the author of the book voted as most outstanding by participating students in grades nine through twelve in Illinois. The award is named for Abraham Lincoln, one of Illinois’ most famous residents and himself an avid reader and noted author. The award is sponsored by the Illinois School Library Media Association (ISLMA). The Abraham Lincoln Award is designed to encourage high school students to read for personal satisfaction and become familiar with authors of young adult and adult books.
To vote, students can stop in the BW Library or visit the BW Library site. The deadline for voting is Friday, February 26.

Come Fly with Us for the 2016 Children’s Play
Belleville West Little Theatre presents the 2016 children’s play, Peter Pan. Based on the Disney film and J.M. Barrie’s enchanting play, this is a modern version of the timeless tale about a boy who wouldn’t grow up. The show features many classic Disney songs, including “You Can Fly,” “A Pirate’s Life for Me,” and “Never Smile at a Crocodile.”
Performances are Thursday, February 4, and Friday, February 5, at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
BW Speech Students Score Top Spots in League
At the final tournament of each year, the Southern Illinois Speech and Acting League recognizes the top 25 students from the league, which includes schools as far north as Bloomington and as far south as Harrisburg. This year, Belleville West students earned 13 of the 25 spots, including the top five places in the league.
The top five awards went to sophomore Wade Cook, sophomore Cassidy Farrar, senior Sam Geiger, senior Bailey Guinn, and senior Brooke Ingram.
The other Belleville West students who earned recogntion were senior Donnie Bland, senior Hannah Higgins, senior Nathan Hirst, senior Henry Holm, junior Avery Reed, junior Janae Robinson, junior Jordan Thompson, and junior Tiffani Volkman.
