English Department Hosts Annual March Madness Event
In celebration of March Madness, the BW English Department invites students to participate in a game of brackets to select their favorite book from the BW Library. Each week in March, students can vote for their favorite books by visiting this link. Every student who participates will be entered in a drawing, with the prize winners announced at the end of the month. The deadline for the first week of voting is Friday, March 4.
BW English Department Announces Second Annual Scholarship
This spring, the BW English Department will present the school’s second English scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a student pursuing a college degree in an English-related field of study. (Qualifying fields include English, English or language arts education, journalism, communication, etc.)
The scholarship recipient will be selected based on his/her grades in English courses at Belleville West and on his/her written responses to two essay questions.
The scholarship application is available in the school counseling office. Applications are due to the Belleville West counseling office no later than Thursday, March 31.
Hy News and Bellevinois Staff Members Bring Home Awards
The Southern Illinois School Press Association (SISPA) handed out awards for its 2016 spring contest on February 24. Student journalists from the Hy News, the BW student newspaper, and the Bellevinois, the BW yearbook, earned the following awards:

Deadline for Writing and Art Submissions is This Friday
Page One, the Belleville West literary and art magazine, is currently accepting student submissions for the 2015-2016 edition. The magazine accepts submissions of original poetry, short fiction, essays, drama, photography, and art. Work must be submitted via email to pageone@bths201.org.
The rules for submission are as follows:
1. Each student may submit up to three pieces in any one genre (prose, poetry, and art).
2. The student must send a separate email for each submission.
3. The subject line of the email should include “Page One Submission” and the genre.
4. The body of the email should include:
The student name
The title of the piece (each piece must have a title)
The medium (photograph, charcoal, acrylic, etc.) if it is an art entry
5. The submission should be attached to the email as a document or file.
6. The student must not place his/her name on the submission itself.
By submitting work to Page One, the student is granting permission for the work to be published in the school magazine. The student agrees to the following:
1. The submitted piece of writing or art is his/her own original work.
2. Page One reserves the right to edit the piece for content or length.
3. Page One does not have space to publish every piece that it receives.
Any student of Belleville West High School is eligible to submit work to Page One. The deadline for this year’s submissions is this Friday, February 26.
Speech Team Boasts Four State Finalists
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team concluded another winning season with a trip to the IHSA State Tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 19 and 20. The team qualified eleven events for the state tournament; of those, four events advanced to the championship round.
Individual awards went to:
Nathan Hirst and Janae Robinson – third place in Humorous Duet Acting
Sam Geiger – fourth place in Informative Speaking
Cassidy Farrar – sixth place in Radio Speaking
Brooke Ingram – sixth place in Special Occasion Speaking
The team is coached by Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, Ms. Julie Schloesser, and Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger. Congratulations to all of the team members and their coaches!
Students Combine Love of Books with Personal Style
Last week, students in Ms. Lindsay Loesche’s classes participated in the #LiterarySwag movement. Started by writer and photographer Yahdon Israel in New York, #LiterarySwag encourages readers to take and post candid pictures that show off their love of books and their personal style.
BW Students Set Eyes on Reading Goal
Once again this year, Belleville West students are reading! The BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
At the end of the fourth triad, the SOPHOMORE CLASS remains in the lead, with 858,801 pages of pleasure reading. That’s more than 85% of the way to the goal! The sophomores read 199,742 pages in the fourth triad.
These sophomore classes all read more than 10,000 pages during the triad:
Mr. Johnson—fourth hour: 24,468 pages
Mr. Johnson—first hour: 18,111 pages
Mr. Johnson—fifth hour: 16,440 pages
Mr. Reidelberger—fifth hour: 15,246 pages
Mr. Jenkins—fourth hour: 11,852 pages
Ms. Ursani—seventh hour: 11,259 pages
Ms. Schloesser—sixth hour: 10,833 pages
At the end of the fourth triad, the FRESHMAN CLASS is just pages away from the top spot, with 853,927 pages of pleasure reading. That’s more than 85% of the way to the goal! The freshmen read 209,554 pages in the fourth triad, the highest number of any class this triad.
These freshman classes all read more than 10,000 pages during the triad:
Mr. Schobert—sixth hour: 18,914 pages
Ms. Thurnau—fifth hour: 18,502 pages
Ms. Thurnau—first hour: 15,146 pages
Mr. Garland—fifth hour: 13,905 pages
Mrs. Hunter—seventh hour: 13,720 pages
Ms. Thurnau—third hour: 13,053 pages
Ms. Thurnau—sixth hour: 11,718 pages
Ms. Ursani—second hour: 11,398 pages
Ms. Loesche—third hour: 11,214 pages
At the end of the fourth triad, the JUNIOR CLASS remains in third place, with 758,284 pages of pleasure reading. That’s more than 75% of the way to the goal. The juniors read 132,335 pages in the fourth triad.
These junior classes all read more than 10,000 pages during the triad:
Ms. Sage—sixth hour: 14,602 pages
Mr. Schobert—third hour: 13,328 pages
Mr. Brunner—first hour: 11,171 pages
Mr. Spriggs—first hour: 10,972 pages
Mr. Schobert—fifth hour: 10,500 pages
At the end of the fourth triad, the SENIOR CLASS has fallen off the pace, with 682,527 pages of pleasure reading. That’s only 68% of the goal. The seniors read 141,239 pages in the fourth triad.
These senior classes all read more than 10,000 pages during the triad:
Mr. Lodle—sixth hour: 33,259 pages
Mr. Lodle—fifth hour: 15,667 pages
Mr. Reidelberger—sixth hour: 15,638 pages
Ms. Thurnau—seventh hour: 13,606 pages
Mr. Schobert—first hour: 10,444 pages
In the fourth triad, the BW English teachers read 13,820 pages of pleasure reading, their second best total of the year.

Freshmen Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Shakespearean Sonnets
To usher in their Romeo and Juliet unit, students in Mrs. Story’s freshman classes celebrated Valentine’s Day by analyzing and writing Shakespearean sonnets. Students also watched clips of sonnets used in popular culture and enjoyed cupcakes made by the school’s culinary classes.

BW Speech Students Win Sectional, Advance to State
The BW Speech and Acting Team won the IHSA Sectional Tournament at Belleville West on Saturday, February 13. The following students, who won individual awards, qualified for the state competition on February 19 and 20:
Sam Geiger – first place in Original Oratory
Nathan Hirst and Janae Robinson – first place in Humorous Duet Acting
Brooke Ingram – first place in Special Occasion Speaking
Romeo Spells – first place in Oratorical Declamation
Sam Geiger – second place in Informative Speaking
Brooke Ingram – second place in Humorous Interpretation
Janae Robinson – second place in Original Comedy
Wade Cook and Cassidy Farrar – third place in Dramatic Duet Acting
Cassidy Farrar – third place in Radio Speaking
Bailey Guinn – third place in Dramatic Interpretation
In addition, the members of the Performance in the Round group won their event, also qualifying for the state tournament. The team is coached by Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, Ms. Julie Schloesser, and Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger.
BW Students Enjoy Poetry Cafe
On Friday, February 12, Belleville West students shared their writing at the annual Poetry Café. The café was sponsored by Page One (the school literary magazine) and the BW Library.
