BW Seniors Drop Everything and Read
On Friday, March 18, Belleville West seniors took time to DROP EVERYTHING AND READ. The BW Library invited seniors to curl up with their favorite books and catch up on their pleasure reading.
Belleville West Theatre Presents New Comedy this Thursday
Belleville West Little Theatre will present the annual contest drama on Thursday, March 17. This year’s offering is Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, the Tony Award-winning comedy by Christopher Durang.
Middle-aged siblings Vanya (sophomore Wade Cook) and Sonia (junior Rachel Deschaine) share a home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. They bicker and complain about the circumstances of their lives. Suddenly, their move-star sister, Masha (senior Bailey Guinn), swoops in with her new boy toy, Spike (senior Henry Holm). Old resentments flare up, eventually leading to threats to sell the house.
Also on the scene are sassy maid Cassandra (junior Janae Robinson), who can predict the future, and aspiring young actress Nina (senior Tara Luhning), whose prettiness somewhat worries the imperious Masha.
Belleville West is excited to be one of the first non-professional theatres to produce this show, the winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play.
The contest play offers a unique opportunity for drama students. The play must be performed within a 40-minute time period, and student technicians have 20 minutes to set and clear the stage for performance. Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike will compete against other area schools to win a berth in the IHSA state tournament. This year’s sectional competition will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19.
The production is directed by Ms. Laurie Bielong and Mr. John Lodle. Student directors are seniors Nate Ackermann, Nathan Hirst, Heather Holdman, Brandi Karbowiak, Alexis Radden, and Michelle Woods; junior Bre McCrary; and sophomore Sarah Hayden.
The March 17 performance is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center, located at 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults.
