Teachers Attend Workshop to Prepare for New School Year
On July 26 and 27, seven BW English teachers participated in a reading and writing workshop led by Kelly Gallagher. A nationally-recognized leader in English education, Gallagher is also the author of such teacher texts as 180 Days, In the Best Interest of Students, Write Like This, and Readicide. The workshop was sponsored by the St. Clair County Regional Office of Education.
Students Earn Accolades at National Speech Tournament
Several members of the Belleville West Speech and Acting Team competed in the National Speech and Debate Association’s national tournament, held June 16-21 in Dallas. For the second year in a row, the team earned a School of Excellence Award, a distinction presented to the top 20 teams at the tournament.
These individuals contributed to the team’s final standing:
Jaylon Muchison — fourth place in Humorous Interpretation
Delaney Holliday — semi-finalist in Program Oral Interpretation
Savannah Tiemann — semi-finalist in Expository Speaking
Annabelle Brown — quarter-finalist in Prose Reading
Max Juhas — octa-finalist in U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking
JoJo Holm — top 60 in Expository Speaking
Isa Karathanos — top 60 in Expository Speaking
Jayden Touchette — top 60 in Expository Speaking
The team coaches are Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, Ms. Julie Schloesser, and Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger. Congratulations on a great finish to the 2018-2019 seasons!
Students Replenish their Stock of Summer Books
Yesterday, Belleville West students and English teachers dropped by the BW Library for the first summer book exchange. Students were able to drop off the books they received from their English teachers in May and select some new books for summer reading. The English department and the BW Library will host the next book exchange on Wednesday, July 17, from 10-11 a.m. Belleville West students can also stop at the West branch of the Belleville Public Library at any time to exchange books.
BW Library Hosts Summer Book Exchange
Belleville West students may participate in a book exchange in the BW Library this Wednesday, June 19, from 10-11 a.m. In order to participate, students must be enrolled at Belleville West and must have one of the English department’s summer reading books to exchange. Students can also share their summer reading recommendations on Flip Grid.
West Students and Teachers Participate in National Book Summit
English teachers Ms. Soune Ursani and Ms. Amber Thurnau are traveling to Nashville with five Belleville West students to participate in the second annual Project LIT Community Summit. The teachers and students will discuss books, meet with nationally-renowned young adult authors, and brainstorm for next year’s Project LIT activities at West.
Three Belleville West Writers Earn State-Wide Recognition
Each year, the Illinois Association of Teachers of English (IATE) sponsors a contest for student writers in middle school and high school. In this year’s “Best of Illinois Poetry and Prose” contest, three Belleville West seniors were recognized for their writing.
Sean Kulig — first place in prose for “My Smash Brother”
August Schwoebel — runner-up in prose of “The Wall”
Caleb Harsin — honorable mention in prose for “Counseled as the Camp Counselor”
All three seniors will be featured in the fall IATE magazine, and the essay by Sean Kulig will appear in print. Congratulations!
Students Prepare for Honors English with Summer Reading Experiences
Students enrolled in an honors English course for the 2019-2020 school year will prepare for the new school year with a little summer reading. Summer reading information for each grade level is available in the corresponding link below.

BW Junior Receives Harvard Book Award
Junior Emma Koontz recently received the 2018-2019 Harvard Prize Book for Belleville West High School. The Harvard Prize Book program was established by Harvard alumni in 1910. The Prize Book is awarded to an outstanding student in the junior class who displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.
BW Junior Receives Yale Book Award
Junior Maxwell Juhas recently received the 2018-2019 Yale Book Award for Belleville West High School. The Yale Book Award is presented to a member of the junior class who combines seriousness of vision and freshmen of perspective with outstanding personal character and intellectual promise. Congratulations, Max!
