English Department Celebrates Reading Program with Tenth-Anniversary Shirts
2019-2020 marks the tenth year of the BW Community of Readers program. To celebrate, the English department will host special reading events throughout the year. To kick off this anniversary, students and parents may purchase commemorative t-shirts in maroon, gray, and black. Shirts will be available for purchase on campus during Open House on Thursday, August 15. Students may also place orders by returning the form below to any English teacher.
The shirt features a design by Belleville West senior Delaney Holliday. Sale price is $10, with an additional charge for extended sizes. Proceeds will help to fund an author visit at the end of this year. Shirt orders are due by Friday, September 6.
Belleville West Theatre Announces Fall Play Auditions
Belleville West Little Theatre will open the 2019-2020 season with a new interpretation of The Crucible, the Tony-winning drama of the Salem witch trials by Arthur Miller. Auditions for the play will be held after school on Tuesday, August 20.
The show requires a cast of approximately twenty men and women. Some of the roles will be cast in a gender-blind manner, meaning that the parts can be played by either men or women. Students in all grade levels are encouraged to get involved.
Auditions packets are available on the theatre bulletin board (located in the hallway by the Performing Arts Center) and outside the English office (room B331).
Finish Your Summer with One (or More!) of these Favorite Books
With one week until the start of the new school year, you still have time for a little more pleasure reading this summer. Why not pick up one of these student favorites?
Belleville West Graduate Wins National Speaking Title
In July, 2019 Belleville West graduate Kaylon Brown won the national championship in the NAACP’s ACT-SO oratory event. ACT-SO is the NAACP’s annual academic, cultural, technological, and scientific contest; the year-long program is designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students. ACT-SO includes 32 competitions in STEM, the humanities, business, and the arts.
Kaylon won his event at the regional contest held in East St. Louis last March. This qualified him to advance to the national competition in Detroit. Kaylon’s winning speech was titled “The Adultification of African-American Youth.”
Congatulations to this talented Belleville West grad!
