Belleville West Students Share their Favorite Books
Throughout this year, Belleville West students are sharing their favorite books with the school. This week features recommendations from Mr. Johnson’s students.
Freshmen and Sophomores Star in Two Comedies this Thursday
Belleville West Little Theatre presents the annual freshman-sophomore show this Thursday, November 14, at 7:00 p.m. This year features a pair of one-act comedies by Ian McWethy: An Absolutely True Story (As Told by a Bunch of Lying Liars) and Appropriate Audience Behavior. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for students.
Speech Team Starts New Season with a Win
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team opening the season with a team victory at the Normal West tournament on Saturday, November 9. West competitors brought home more than 40 individual awards.

Thespian Troupe Honors Four New Members
At the conclusion of the fall play on October 12, Belleville West Thespian Troupe #369 welcomed four new members: seniors Shelbie Descamps, JoJo Holm, Isa Karathanos, and Jayden Touchette.
The International Thespian Society is an honor organization that recognizes outstanding contributions to high school theatre. Each of these students has devoted at least 300 hours to Belleville West theatre productions, with a minimum of 150 hours in backstage work. Congratulations!
Registration Now Open for Read for a Lifetime Program
Belleville West students can sign up now for this year’s Read for a Lifetime program. Participating students need to read any four of the books on this year’s RFL list by April. Students who complete the program will receive an invitation to the annual Reader’s Breakfast in the BW Library, which includes a raffle of treats, books, and a Chromebook. Participants also receive a special certificate from the Illinois Secretary of State. Students can register in the BW Library or at this link.

Students Continue Tenth Annual Reading Challenge
Once again this year, Belleville West students are reading! The BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
At the end of the second triad, the FRESHMAN CLASS has jumped from fourth place to first place, with a commanding lead of 463,997 pages of pleasure reading—almost half of the goal! The freshmen read 306,485 pages in the second triad, an average of 577 pages per freshman—and almost double what they read in the first triad! These freshman classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Mrs. Hunter—first hour: 1398 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—first hour: 1144 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—third hour: 1094 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—sixth hour: 1045 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—second hour: 981 pages per student
Mrs. Story—second hour: 763 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—seventh hour: 754 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—sixth hour: 727 pages per student
Ms. Comley—second hour: 671 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—fifth hour: 610 pages per student
Ms. Mims—first hour: 568 pages per student

The seniors read 180,414 pages of pleasure reading in the second triad, an average of 362 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:

Mr. Brunner—fifth hour: 772 pages per student
Ms. Short—second hour: 585 pages per student
Mrs. Lewis—fourth hour: 542 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—second hour: 508 pages per student
Mr. Lodle—sixth hour: 501 pages per student
The JUNIOR CLASS is in third place, with 305,569 pages of pleasure reading. The juniors read 141,426 pages in the second triad, an average of 305 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Mr. Brunner—second hour: 648 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—sixth hour: 486 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—seventh hour: 431 page per student
The SOPHOMORE CLASS is currently at the back of the pack, with 304,485 pages of pleasure reading. The sophomores read 140,441 pages of pleasure reading in the second triad, an average of 245 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Ms. Ursani—first hour: 685 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser—first hour: 597 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—second hour: 576 pages per student
The teachers in the ENGLISH DEPARTMENT read 16,367 pages in the second triad, an average of 818 pages per English teacher.
Can the freshmen continue to increase their lead over the other classes? Can the seniors catch up? Can the juniors and sophomores get on pace to reach ONE MILLION PAGES by the end of the year? Visit the library, find some good books, and keep reading!

Shoppers and Students Enjoy First BW Vendors Bazaar
The Belleville West English Department hosted the first annual BW Vendors Bazaar on Saturday, November 2. Over 35 vendors sold crafts, gifts, art, beauty products, jewelry, clothes, and food. Members of the BW National English Honor Society worked throughout the day to load products for vendors, assist shoppers, and sell concessions.
NaNoWriMo Kicks Off Today
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) begins today. Several students in the BW chapter of the National English Honor Society are challenging themselves to write a novel during the month of November.
Auditions for Children’s Play Take Place Next Week
Auditions for this year’s children’s play, Seussical the Musical, will be held next Tuesday, November 5, from 3:45-6:00 p.m. in room A111. Students in all grade levels are eligible to audition. Information packets are available in rooms B327, B214, and A111.
