Speech Team Scores in Two Weekend Tournaments
On November 23, the Belleville West Speech and Acting Team split to compete in two tournaments, placing among the top teams in both contests.
The varsity competitors traveled to the Thornton Turkey Tournament, where they faced off against some of the top teams in the state. The Belleville West group claimed second place overall.

Two BW Writers Earn State Distinction
Two Belleville West graduates—class of 2019 students Shane Lehnherr and Aadem Neal—were recently recognized by DePaul University in the Best of Illinois High School Writing contest. Their writing was selected from last year’s edition of Page One, the Belleville West literary and art magazine. The contest received hundreds of submissions from more than 70 literary magazines throughout the state.
Shane’s prose piece, “Laces,” and Aadem’s poem, “Son to Mother,” will be published next month in a digital anthology. Along with other award winners, they will be invited to a reading and reception at DePaul University in January.

Students and Teachers Meet for Book Club Discussion
The BW Book Club held its second meeting of the year last evening. Students and teachers met at The Abbey to discuss the novel Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.
English Honor Society Raises Funds for Holiday Book Drive
The BW chapter of the National English Honor Society is conducting a holiday book drive for children this week. Students may donate change in their English classes and in the BW Library through this Friday, November 22. NEHS members will use all funds to donate new books to children for the holidays.
BW Book Club Meets Tomorrow
The BW Book Club meets tomorrow to discuss Yaa Gyasi’s novel Homegoing. The group will meet at The Abbey on West Main Street at 4:00 p.m. Any student who has read the book is welcome to attend.

One-Act Plays Move to Friday this Week
Belleville West Little Theatre presents the annual freshman-sophomore show this Friday, November 15, at 7:00 p.m. (This is a change in date due to the snow day earlier this week.) This year features a pair of one-act comedies by Ian McWethy: An Absolutely True Story (As Told by a Bunch of Lying Liars) and Appropriate Audience Behavior. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.
