Belleville West Journalists Advance to State Competition
Congratulations to the following students from the Hy News and Bellevinois, who placed in the IHSA Sectional Journalism Contest on Saturday, April 10. The top three finishers in each event will advance to the IHSA State Journalism Contest this Saturday, April 24.

English Department Hosts Virtual Shakespeare Festival
The BW English Department will host the annual Shakespeare Festival next Thursday and Friday, April 15 and 16. Because of health and safety restrictions, this year’s celebration will take place virtually. In their English classes, students will view performances from Shakespeare’s plays, listen to music from the Renaissance, learn about Shakespeare’s life and times, and participate in interactive web games.
BW Student Earns Top Acting Distinction
Congratulations to junior Elise Moore, who was named to the prestigious IHSA All-State Drama Cast from the Belleville West production of The Women of Lockerbie! She was one of only 23 students in the state to receive this honor.
April is National Poetry Month
April marks the celebration of National Poetry Month. At Belleville West, English classes will observe the month by incorporating poetry studies, composition of original poetry, spoken word poetry, and a poem-of-the-day for each class day.
Read for a Lifetime Voting Ends Next Week
Voting for this year’s Read for a Lifetime book ends next Friday, April 9. Students who registered to participate in the program should check their student email for a voting link from the BW Library. To be eligible to vote, a student must have completed at least four books from this year’s list.

Students Select March Madness Winner
With voting ending on Friday, Belleville West students have selected a winner in the annual March Madness reading event. This year’s winner is The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
When classes resume after spring break, winners will be announced in the prize drawing from students who participated. Thanks to everyone who voted!
2021 Abraham Lincoln Award Winner Revealed
Truly Devious, the 2018 young adult novel by Maureen Johnson, was recently announced as the 2021 Abraham Lincoln Book. The book was chosen by students throughout the state of Illinois who read at least four books from this year’s Abraham Lincoln nominees.
March Madness Ends this Week
In celebration of March Madness, the BW English Department is sponsoring a contest for students to select their favorite book from the BW Library. Each week in March, students can vote for their favorite books by visiting this link. Every student who participates will be entered in a drawing, with the prize winners announced at the end of the month.
This week, the final two books face off: The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan vs. One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus. The deadline for voting is this Friday, March 26.
Contest Drama Wins 2021 Sectional Championship
Congratulations to the cast and crew of the 2021 Belleville West contest drama, The Women of Lockerbie. On Saturday, March 20, the show won the IHSA Sectional Drama title.
Cast members Jerry Aplin, Abby Barger, Anna Buescher, Elise Moore, Diego Reed, and Audrey O’Renic were named to the All-Sectional Drama Cast.
The cast and crew will now compete in the (virtual) IHSA State Drama Contest on March 26 and 27. Follow this link through March 27 to stream the show.
