English Department Sends Students Home with Books for the Summer
Throughout the school year, the BW English Department and the BW Library encourage students to read for pleasure. To keep students reading during the summer months, the English Department is sending home books with every freshman, sophomore, and junior.
As part of the reading program, students may exchange books with West classmates during the summer, pick up new books in the BW Library during summer school hours, and stop at the Belleville Public Library (West Branch) to select new books.
BW Thespian Troupe Welcomes Eight New Members
At the conclusion of the spring musical, Belleville West Thespian Troupe #369 welcomed eight new members: sophomore Emma Loewe; juniors Kacie Denton, Morgan Elliff, Josh McWhorter, Ayden Thurnau, Michael Wagner, Michael Wells; and senior Anna Buescher.
The International Thespian Society is an honor organization that recognizes outstanding contributions to high school theatre. Each of these students has devoted at least 300 hours to Belleville West theatre productions, with a minimum of 150 hours in backstage work. Congratulations!
English Department Presents Annual Scholarship
The BW English Department presented the Laurie M. Bielong English Scholarship on Thursday, May 13. The scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a college degree in an English-related field of study.
This year, the department recognized two worthy candidates with the award: Caroline Geib, who plans to pursue a career in journalism, and Khaleah Webb, who plans to study creative writing.
Congratulations to these two seniors!
BW Chapter of National English Honor Society Inducts 23 New Members
This year, the BW English Department welcomes the second class of students into the Belleville West chapter of the National English Honor Society. The 23 students in this group have maintained at least a 3.5 (unweighted) English GPA through four years of high school, participated in small projects on campus to promote the language arts, and volunteered for several large projects (such as the virtual Shakespeare festival) this year.
Because the chapter is unable to hold a traditional induction ceremony this year, the sponsors put together this presentation to honor the commitment and achievement of the students. Congratulations to these outstanding members of the class of 2021!
Student Literary Magazine Goes on Sale Today
The 2020-2021 edition of Page One, the Belleville West literary and art magazine, goes on sale today. Copies will be available until the end of the school year. The price of the magazine, which is printed in color, is just $3. Students can stop in room B335 to purchase copies.
BW Musical Streams this Weekend
Belleville West Little Theatre will stream this year’s spring musical, Songs for a New World, this Friday through Sunday, May 7 through 9.
The show, with music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, is about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back. It’s a moving collection of powerful songs that examine life, love, and the choices that we make.

Belleville West Celebrates Reading
The Belleville West English Department holds its annual Reading Celebration Day this week. Because of the hybrid schedule, classes will celebrate on May 6 and 7. The festivities include prizes for top readers, time for pleasure reading, and books for all students to take home for pleasure reading over the summer.

West Students Honored in Poetry Contest
Congratulations to BW senior Jarred McLean and to BW sophomore Jada McLean. These two students recently won awards in the Young Masters Writing Program sponsored by The Links (Gateway chapter of Illinois and Missouri). Jarred took for first in the poetry contest, and Jada took second place in the poetry contest.
