Freshmen and Seniors Lead this year’s Million Page Challenge
The BW English Department has challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year. At the end of the second triad, how is each class doing in this year’s competition?
At the end of the second triad, the FRESHMAN CLASS has 402,364 pages of pleasure reading. The freshmen are currently in first place, and they’re more than 40% of the way to the goal. The freshmen read 233,184 pages in the second triad, an average of 426 pages per freshman. These freshman classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Mrs. Story, sixth hour – 1106 pages per student
Ms. Schaab, seventh hour – 786 pages per
Ms. Thurnau, fifth hour – 665 pages per student
Mrs. Story, seventh hour – 660 pages per student
Ms. Guebert, third hour – 657 pages per student
Ms. Mims, sixth hour – 637 pages per student
Ms. Comley, fifth hour – 636 pages per student
Ms. Mims, seventh hour – 622 pages per student
Ms. Comley, first hour – 555 pages per student
Ms. Schaab, second hour – 544 pages per student
At the end of the second triad, the SENIOR CLASS has 346,403 pages of pleasure reading. That puts the seniors in second place and on track to read more than one million pages this year. The seniors read 181,954 pages in the second triad, an average of 403 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Mr. Lodle, sixth hour – 1270 pages per student
Mrs. Story, second hour – 782 pages per student
Mrs. Story, third hour – 737 pages per student
Mr. Lodle, fifth hour – 732 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, first hour – 436 pages per student
At the end of the second triad, the SOPHOMORE CLASS has 332,806 pages of pleasure reading. That’s just under one-third of a million pages. The sophomores read 174,531 pages in the second triad, an average of 357 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Mr. Johnson, fourth hour – 1212 pages per student
Mrs. Lewis, second hour – 1061 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser, seventh hour – 756 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser, sixth hour – 648 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger, second hour – 586 pages per student
Mr. Johnson, fifth hour – 470 pages per student
At the end of the second triad, the JUNIOR CLASS has 277,586 pages of pleasure reading. The juniors read 136,406 pages in the second triad, an average of 293 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Ms. Chalmers, fourth hour – 910 pages per student
Mr. Schobert, second hour – 557 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, sixth hour – 542 pages per student
Mr. Schobert, sixth hour – 513 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, seventh hour – 446 pages per student

Speech Team Opens Season with a Victory

The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team took first place in this year’s opening SISAL (Southern Illinois Speech and Acting League) tournament, the team’s first in-person competition since the 2019-2020 season. The tournament took place at Belleville West on Saturday, November 6.

Registration for Read for a Lifetime Program is Now Open
Belleville West students who wish to participate in the 2021-2022 Read for a Lifetime program may register between now and November 12 at this link. Students who enroll in the program and read any four books from the list below are eligible for prizes in the spring and to vote for their favorite book in April. This annual program is sponsored by the state of Illinois.

Children’s Play Auditions Take Place Next Week

BW Little Theatre will hold auditions for the 2022 children’s play, Matilda, Jr.: The Musical, next Monday, November 1. Auditions will take place after school in A111. Students in all grade levels are eligible to audition. Interested students can access the audition materials by joining the Google Classroom at this link.
English Teachers Win Grants for their Classroom Libraries
Congratulations to Belleville West English teachers Kelcie Comley, Julie Schloesser, and Lannette Story! They were recently awarded grants for their classroom libraries from the McKendree University “Windows, Mirrors, and Sliding Glass Doors” book program.
Thespian Troupe Inducts Six New Members

At the final performance of the fall play on October 9, BW Thespian Troupe #369 welcomed six new members: seniors Clara Baldus, Annabelle Bowman, Mallory Houk, Elise Moore, Chloe Sierra, and junior Zoe Wallis.
The International Thespian Society is an honor organization that recognizes outstanding contributions to high school theatre. Each of these students has devoted at least 300 hours to Belleville West theatre productions, with a minimum of 150 hours in backstage work. Congratulations!
Classes Observe the National Day of Writing in a Variety of Ways


Students in BW English classes participated in the National Day of Writing this Wednesday, October 20. Ms. Chalmers’s students shared inspirational quotes through social media. Mr. Herron’s students wrote “Six Words on 2020,” “Six Words for my 18-Year-Old Self,” and “A Funny Story in Six Words.” Mrs. Lewis’s classes composed collaborative “snowball” short stories. Ms. Schaab’s students wrote and illustrated six-word memoirs. Ms. Schloesser’s students wrote six-word memoirs using sidewalk chalk in the school courtyard.
West Students Prepare for National Day of Writing

Each October, the National Council of Teachers of English observes the National Day of Writing. Belleville West students will celebrate on October 20 with creative writing activities in English classes.
English Department Goes Pink

Members of the Belleville West English Department dressed in pink on Friday, October 15, to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Belleville West’s annual “West Goes Pink” awareness campaign is sponsored by the Harambee organization, which is advised by English teacher Ms. Carnetta Chalmers.
Students Choose Next Book Club Selection
Students in the BW Book Club have chosen Vivian Gibson’s memoir The Last Children of Mill Creek as their next reading selection. Copies of the book are available for check-out at the circulation desk in the BW Library. The group will meet for discussion on Wednesday, November 17.
