Freshmen Participate in Summer Experience

This week, the BW English and math departments are hosting the Freshman Summer Experience for incoming students. Participating students have the opportunity to tour the Belleville West campus, meet fellow students, meet administrators and teachers, learn about extracurricular activities, tour the library, work with student technology resources, and pick up tips for success in high school.

West Students Read More than Four Million Pages for Pleasure
The BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year. How did they do?
Together, Belleville West students read 4,169,249 pages of pleasure reading in the 2021-2022 school year! What does that mean?
If those pages were set out end-to-end, they would stretch 560 miles. That’s all the way from Belleville to Atlanta!
If you read one page per minute, it would take 2,895 days (that’s almost eight years) to read that many pages—without any breaks to eat or sleep.
If you had a penny for every page that Belleville West students read this year, you would have more than $41,692.
How did the classes stack up against each other?
The FRESHMAN CLASS finished the year with 1,106,745 pages of pleasure reading. The freshmen read 151,104 pages in the sixth triad, an average of 296 pages per freshman. These freshman classes read the most pages per student in the final triad:
Ms. Comley, first hour – 912 pages per student
Ms. Comley, fifth hour – 769 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, fourth hour – 608 pages per student
Mr. Herron, sixth hour – 602 pages per student
Ms. Comley, second hour – 469 pages per student
Ms. Kurtz, first hour – 391 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, second hour – 303 pages per student
The SENIOR CLASS finished the year with 1,076,240 pages of pleasure reading. The seniors read 134,522 pages in the sixth triad, an average of 376 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student in the final triad:
Ms. Thurnau, first hour – 1374 pages per student
Mr. Lodle, sixth hour – 1231 pages per student
Mr. Lodle, fifth hour – 561 pages per student
Mr. Brunner, fifth hour – 398 pages per student
Mr. Riedelberger, third hour – 309 pages per student
Mrs. Story, third hour – 290 pages per student
The SOPHOMORE CLASS finished the year with 1,055,075 pages of pleasure reading. The sophomores read 179,387 pages in the sixth triad, an average of 402 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes read the most pages per student in the final triad:
Mr. Johnson, fourth hour – 1457 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser, seventh hour – 825 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser, sixth hour – 526 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser, third hour – 581 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, second hour – 413 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, first hour – 353 pages per student
Mr. Johnson, fifth hour – 349 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger, second hour – 334 pages per student
Mr. Reidleberger, sixth hour – 327 pages per student
The JUNIOR CLASS finished the year with 931,189 pages of pleasure reading. The juniors read 133,485 pages in the sixth triad, an average of 324 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student in the final triad:

BW Junior Receives Harvard Book Award

Junior Aloisia Rickert recently received the 2021-2022 Harvard Prize Book for Belleville West High School. The Harvard Prize Book program was established by Harvard alumni in 1910. The Prize Book is awarded to an outstanding student in the junior class who displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.
Senior Wins Writing Award in Inaugural SLU Contest

In St. Louis University’s inaugural writing contest for high school students, Belleville West senior Julia Koziatek won second place for her poem “Spring Came Early This Year.” The contest was open to all students enrolled in St. Louis University’s 1818 dual enrollment program. Congratulations, Julia!
Students Honored in State Writing Contest

Four Belleville West seniors were honored for their writing in the annual IATE (Illinois Association of Teachers of English) Best Poetry and Prose contest. Ellie Coats and Natalie Reed are runners-up in the prose category. Gini Goodrich and Ayden Thurnau earned honorable mentions in the prose category. They will be featured in next fall’s IATE publication.
West Senior Wins State Oratorical Contest

Congratulations to Belleville West senior Abby Barger! On Saturday, April 30, she won the state title in the 2022 Optimist Club Oratorical Contest. She now advances to compete at the international level. Way to represent West, Abby!
Thespian Troupe Welcomes Seven New Members

After the final performance of the spring musical on April 30, Belleville West Thespian Troupe #369 welcomed seven new members: juniors Ella Davis, Sydni Juhas, Sophia Overturf, and Alexis Sheldon; and seniors Avery Hillier, Grace Kearns, and Diego Reed. Each of these students has devoted more than 300 hours to the theatre program at Belleville West, with at least 150 of those hours behind the scenes (on technical crews, as student directors, or at work days). Congratulations!
NEHS Inducts Students from Class of 2022

On May 5, the Belleville West chapter of the National English Honor Society inducted 39 students, listed below, into the group. This is the largest class of NEHS students at Belleville West since the group’s charter three years ago. In order to qualify for the BW chapter of the National English Honor Society, students must maintain a 3.5 grade point average in English classes and participate in English-related service projects (such as the holiday book drive and the Shakespeare festival). Congratulations to these students!
