The group will meet at The Abbey on West Main Street from 5-6 p.m. The group’s first selection is The Age of Miracles, a novel by Karen Thompson Walker. Any student interested in joining the Book Club can pick up a membership card from Ms. Ursani (in room B323), from Mr. Garland (in room B325), or from Mr. Lodle (in room B331).
THE AGE OF MIRACLES
by Karen Thompson Walker
On an ordinary Saturday, Julia awakes to discover that something has happened to the rotation of the earth. The days and nights are growing longer and longer, gravity is affected, the birds, the tides, human behavior and cosmic rhythms are thrown into disarray. In a world of danger and loss, Julia faces surprising developments in herself, and her personal world—divisions widening between her parents, strange behavior by Hannah and other friends, the vulnerability of first love, a sense of isolation, and a rebellious new strength. With crystalline prose and the indelible magic of a born storyteller, Karen Thompson Walker gives us a breathtaking story of people finding ways to go on, in an ever-evolving world.
BW Book Club Holds Informational Meeting
The BW Book Club will hold a short informational meeting this Thursday, August 21, at 3:30 in room B323.
The Belleville West Book Club is open to students in all grade levels. The group meets four times during the school year (in October, December, January, and April) to discuss books selected by the club members. Discussion sessions are held in the evening at The Abbey on West Main Street.
All interested students are encouraged to attend this meeting to learn more about the group.
BW Theatre Announces Auditions for Fall Play
Auditions for the 2014 Belleville West Fall Play will be held on Tuesday, August 19, at 3:45 in the BW Performing Arts Center. Audition packets are currently available on the theatre bulletin board and outside the English office (room B331). Applications for student directors and student technical directors are also available in those locations.
This year’s fall production is The Miracle Worker by William Gibson. This American classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, the blind and deaf Helen Keller. Trapped in a secret world and unable to communicate, Helen is violent and spoiled. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. Annie’s success finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: “water.”
Performances will be held on October 9 through 11, with matinee performances scheduled for area grade school students on October 8 and 9.
Football Players Visit with Author Geoff Herbach
Members of the varsity football team concluded their “One Book, One Team” summer reading event with a Skype visit with author Geoff Herbach.
Over the past month, team members, their coaches, library staff members, and English teachers read Herbach’s book Stupid Fast. This novel tells the story of high school student Felton Reinstein, who finds solace from family troubles when he joins the football team.
After practice and breakfast on Wednesday, July 16, members of the BW footballl team had the opportunity to visit with author Geoff Herbach via Skype. Several players (and some of the coaches) even had the chance to ask the author questions about his book.
Thanks to Mrs. Mary Barteau (BW library director), Mr. Cameron Pettus (head football coach), the football coaching staff, the English department, and the young men of the BW football team for creating this unique experience!
