INTO THE BEAUTIFUL NORTH by Luis Alberto Urrea
Nineteen-year-old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her Mexican village and dreams about her father, who journeyed to the US when she was young. Recently, it has dawned on her that he isn’t the only man who has left town. In fact, there are almost no men in the village—they’ve all gone north. While watching The Magnificent Seven, Nayeli decides to go north herself and recruit seven men—her own “Siete Magníficos”—to repopulate her hometown and protect it from the bandidos who plan on taking it over. Filled with unforgettable characters and prose as radiant as the Sinaloan sun, Into the Beautiful North is the story of an irresistible young woman’s quest to find herself on both sides of the fence.
BW Theatre Opens Season with The Miracle Worker
The Belleville West Little Theatre will present its annual fall play on Thursday through Saturday, October 9 through 11. This year’s production is The Miracle Worker, the classic American drama by William Gibson.
The Miracle Worker tells the story of Annie Sullivan (sophomore Janae Robinson) and her blind and deaf student, Helen Keller (sophomore Rachel Deschaine). The play dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her pupil.
Helen’s father (senior Tyler Herron) and step-brother (junior Nathan Hirst) have lost hope for Helen. But her mother (junior Bailey Guinn) knows that Helen has a bright mind.
Trapped in a secret world and unable to communicate, Helen is violent and spoiled. Annie realizes that Helen possesses a spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence.
Annie’s success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: “water.”
The original production of The Miracle Worker won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1960. The 1962 film production was nominated for five Academy Awards.
This year’s production of The Miracle Worker is directed by Ms. Laurie Bielong and Mr. John Lodle. The student director is senior Courtney Pegg. The student technical directors are seniors Jake Bernstein and Noah Murakami; and juniors Heather Holdman, Brandi Karbowiak, Alexis Radden, and Michelle Woods.
Performances are at 7:00 each evening in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center, located at 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults.

THE AGE OF MIRACLES
by Karen Thompson Walker
On an ordinary Saturday, Julia awakes to discover that something has happened to the rotation of the earth. The days and nights are growing longer and longer, gravity is affected, the birds, the tides, human behavior and cosmic rhythms are thrown into disarray. In a world of danger and loss, Julia faces surprising developments in herself, and her personal world—divisions widening between her parents, strange behavior by Hannah and other friends, the vulnerability of first love, a sense of isolation, and a rebellious new strength. With crystalline prose and the indelible magic of a born storyteller, Karen Thompson Walker gives us a breathtaking story of people finding ways to go on, in an ever-evolving world.
