BW Little Theatre Concludes Season with Classic Musical
The Belleville West Little Theatre will present its annual musical on Thursday through Saturday, April 28 through 30. This year’s production is Anything Goes.
The show, which features beloved songs by Cole Porter, premiered on Broadway in 1934. The musical has been revived on Broadway several times since then, most recently in 2011. The 2011 production earned the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical.
Anything Goes is set aboard the ocean liner S.S. American. Nightclub singer and evangelist Reno Sweeney (junior Rachel Deschaine) is en route from New York to England. Her pal Billy Crocker (senior Nathan Hirst) has stowed away to be near his love, Hope Harcourt (sophomore Cassidy Farrar). But the problem is that Hope is engaged to the wealthy Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (sophomore Wade Cook).
Joining this love triangle on board the luxury liner are Public Enemy #13, Moonface Martin (junior Janae Robinson), and his sidekick, Erma (senior Bailey Guinn). With the help of some elaborate disguises, tap-dancing sailors, and old-fashioned blackmail, Reno and Martin join forces to help Billy in his quest to win Hope’s heart.
Anything Goes features a score by Cole Porter. The show includes such memorable songs as “Anything Goes,” “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “You’re the Top,” “It’s De-Lovely,” and “All Through the Night.”
This year’s production of Anything Goes is directed by Ms. Jennifer Sage. Dr. Thomas Birkner serves as the musical director. Both Ms. Sage and Dr. Birkner will retire at the end of the year, so this production is the final show in their decade-long collaboration.
Mr. Nick Johnson is the choreographer. Mr. John Lodle is the technical director.
Performances are at 7:00 each evening in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center, located at 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West. Tickets are $5 for students, $8 for adults, and $6 for senior citizens.
Ms. Sage Honored by Belleville High School Board
At the April school board meeting, BW Principal Rich Mertens honored English teacher Ms. Jennifer Sage. In recognizing Ms. Sage, he made the following comments:
Jennifer Sage has taught in the English Department at Belleville West for more than 20 years. Before that, she taught language arts at Signal Hill Grade School, one of our feeder schools. During her time at West, Jennifer has demonstrated her versatility by teaching a wide variety of courses—including freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and senior electives such as Creative Writing, Novel Seminar, and Appreciation of Theatre. She has been the lead teacher of the English 5-6 Honors course for nearly a decade.
Beyond teaching her students the skills of reading, writing, and speaking, Jennifer teaches students to listen to each other, to make responsible decisions, and bto become mature young adults.
Jennifer has been a fixture in the Belleville West theatre since she joined the faculty. She directed the annual fall play and worked as the technical director for the spring musical in her early years at West. She served as the choreographer for the children’s play for more than 10 years. She drove a 24-foot rental truck for the contest play for 15 shows. And she has directed the spring musical for the last eleven years. Her twelfth musical—Anything Goes—will take the West stage this April 28 through 30.
Jennifer has volunteered her time to the BW Harambee organization almost since its inception. She assists with the group’s annual show for Black History Month, organizes the annual Soul Food tasting day, and accompanies students on their trip each summer.
What may be most impressive about Jennifer is her generous spirit. She serves on the district’s English 5-6 curriculum team, dedicating countless hours to the construction of content and assessments. She devotes time to provide thoughtful feedback on student writing—even when that writing isn’t for her class. She supervises undergraduate observers and student teachers, shepherding new teachers into the profession. She directs a group of students for a performance in the school’s annual Shakespeare festival. She fosters strong relationships with new teachers, sharing materials and advice from her years of experience.
On any weekend of the school year, you’re likely to find Jennifer Sage in her classroom, grading papers or preparing for the week ahead. The time, care, and hard work that she invests in her teaching are models for her students and for her colleagues.
Thank you, Jennifer, for everything that you do for your students, for Belleville West, and for the community.
BW Students Skype with Author Jason Reynolds
During the visit, Mr. Reynolds discussed his favorite authors (including William Shakespeare), his influences as a writer, and the experiences which shaped the creation of All American Boys. Approximately 20 students had the opportunity to ask the author questions about his work.
The visit was sponsored by the English Department and the Belleville West Library.
BW Mass Media Project Featured in Belleville News-Democrat
Students enrolled in Mass Media, a senior English elective at Belleville West, recently completed an assignment inspired by the 48-Hour Film Project. Their work is the subject of a feature story in the Belleville News-Democrat. The course instructor is Mr. Nick Johnson.
BW Students Enjoy Eleventh Annual Shakespeare Fest
Belleville West students celebrated William Shakespeare’s birthday on Friday, April 15. The eleventh annual BW Shakespeare Festival began in the school’s courtyard with scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, contemporary poetry inspired by Shakespeare, choral and instrumental music, and an updated version of Romeo and Juliet by members of Harambee. Students then moved to the library, where they tasted food based on Renaissance recipes, learned about science in Shakespeare’s time, created screen-printed images with members of the art department, competed in trivia challenges about Shakespeare’s work, learned about Renaissance weaving, took pictures with Shakespeare, and played traditional Renaissance games.
Student Newspaper Earns State Grant
The Belleville West student newspaper, the Hy News, recently won a grant from the Illinois Press Foundation’s 2016 High School Mini-Grants Program. The grant exists to support First Amendment rights in school journalism. The Hy News staff will use the funds to update their technology. The newspaper adviser is Mr. Stephen Garland.
Freshmen Combine Literature with Hands-On Experience
This semester, students in many English 1-2 classes are reading The Circuit, the first volume of autobiography by Francisco Jimenez. As a child, Jimenez came with his family from Mexico to the United States. He, his parents, and his siblings spent years as migrant workers picking cotton, strawberries, and carrots.
In order to get a small sense of Jimenez’s early life, students of Mrs. Hunter, Ms. Mims, and Mrs. Short traveled to the Bridges campus last Tuesday. They learned about the district’s Bridges program from director Mrs. Robyn Lewis, spread dirt for planting, cleared beds, and weeded spring plants.
