More West Students Celebrate the National Day of Writing
As part of the National Day of Writing last Thursday, students in Ms. Amber Thurnau’s classes created a wall of poetry. Her students wrote homecoming haiku and maroon acrostics in honor of Belleville West Spirit Week.
Students in English 1-2 classes with Ms. Ashley Mims, Mrs. Ashley Short, and Mrs. Jules Hunter practiced their descriptive writing. Students described one room of a haunted house, incorporating at least three of the senses in their descriptions. After writing, students created visual representations of each room.
Students in Mrs. Lannette Story’s classes wrote short pieces of poetry. Student volunteers then performed their poems in front of the class.

Seniors Combine Dress-Up Day with Writing Activity
To combine the National Day of Writing with Senior Citizen Day (one of the dress-up days for the BW Homecoming Week), Ms. Ashley Mims gave the seniors in her Advanced Writing Skills class an assignment about perspective. She challenged them to consider what their lives will be like and to write letters as their 70-year-old selves. Students wrote to their families, sharing their fondest memories and biggest regrets. Students also created wills to reflect what their imagined lives will be like.
