BW Sophomore Publishes Winning Story Online
Ryan Riggs, a Belleville West sophomore, was named the October winner of the 53-Word Story Contest, an event sponsored by the online magazine Prime Number: A Magazine of Distinctive Poetry and Prose. Ryan created the story “Cosmic Birthday” in his English 3 class with Ms. Julie Schloesser. The assignments was part of Belleville West’s celebration of the National Day of Writing on October 20. His winning story is available here.
Harambee Invites New Members to Meeting This Friday
Belleville West Harambee will meet this Friday, November 18, at 8:00 a.m. in room A111. This is the final opportunity this year for new members to join the group.
Belleville West Readers Share Their Favorite Books
Throughout this year, Belleville West students are sharing their favorite books with the school. This week, seniors from Mr. Lodle’s classes recommend their favorite books.
Belleville West Book Club Meets This Week
The Belleville West Book Club will hold its discussion of David Mitchell’s Slade House this Wednesday, November 16, starting at 4 p.m. The discussion session will be held at The Abbey, located at 5801 West Main Street. Any student who has read the book is welcome to join the discussion. Students will select the club’s next book at this meeting.
Speech Team Scores Another Victory
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team won its second tournament of the season on November 12. The team placed more than 130 points ahead of its closest competitor at the Normal West Speech Tournament.

BW Theatre Presents Freshman-Sophomore Show
Belleville West Little Theatre presents its annual freshman-sophomore show next Thursday, November 17. This year’s program features two one-act plays, Ten Worst Things about High School and Ten Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse. The performance begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
Belleville West Readers Finish Strong Second Triad
Once again this year, Belleville West students are reading! The BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
At the end of the second triad, the FRESHMAN CLASS has claimed the lead, with 440,644 pages of pleasure reading. The freshmen read 247,071 pages in the second triad, a total of 442 pages per freshman. These freshman classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Ms. Loesche—fourth hour: 1168 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—sixth hour: 1055 pages per student
Mrs. Hunter—sixth hour: 933 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—third hour: 842 pages per student
Ms. Loesche—third hour: 715 pages per student
Mrs. Short—sixth hour: 614 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—first hour: 514 pages per student
At the end of the second triad, the SOPHOMORE CLASS has slipped back, with 427,847 pages of pleasure reading. The sophomores read 213,027 pages in the second triad, a total of 407 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:

Mr. Johnson—second hour: 916 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser—sixth hour: 958 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger—second hour: 729 pages per student

The SENIOR CLASS has climbed to third place, with 381,861 pages of pleasure reading. The seniors read 193,218 pages in the second triad, a total of 385 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:

Mr. Lodle—sixth hour: 926 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—second hour: 544 pages per student
Ms. Short—first hour: 479 pages per student

The JUNIOR CLASS has fallen to the back of the pack, with 378,397 pages of pleasure reading. The juniors read 189,000 pages in the second triad, a total of 386 pages per junior. (That’s one more page per student than the senior class.) These junior classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:

Mr. Spriggs—sixth hour: 954 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—sixth hour: 751 pages per student
Mr. Spriggs—seventh hour: 593 pages per student

Belleville West Students Excel on PARCC English Test
The state of Illinois recently released results from the 2016 PARCC test. This standardized assessment, administered to all Belleville West students enrolled in English 5-6, required students to respond to several reading passages and to write multiple essays.
Student scores were reported in the following categories:
5: Exceeds college and career readiness standards
4: Meets college and career readiness standards
3: Approaches college and career readiness standards
2: Partially meets college and career readiness standards
1: Does not meet college and career readiness standards
Throughout the state of Illinois, 34% of students scored in the top two categories (exceeds or meets standards) on the English language arts test. In all states administering the PARCC test, 38% of students scored in the top two categories on the English language arts test.
At Belleville West, over 72% of students met or exceeded the standards on the English language arts assessment. (This is up from 60% of students who met or exceeded standards in 2015). At Belleville West, over 89% of students scored in the top three categories on the English language arts test.
