BW Journalists Capture Awards at SISPA Conference
Staff members of the Hy News, the Belleville West student newspaper, and the Bellevinois, the Belleville West yearbook, attended the annual Southern Illinois School Press Association (SISPA) contest at SIU-Carbondale on Wednesday, February 22.

Students Meet BW Graduate and Author
On Tuesday, February 21, Belleville West students enjoyed a visit from author Sarah S. Reida. Ms. Reida, a 2000 graduate of Belleville West High School, published the middle-grade novel Monsterville: A Lissa Black Production in 2016. She spoke to West students about the writing and publication process, shared information about her book’s upcoming sequel, and answered questions from aspiring writers.

Throughout this year, Belleville West students are sharing their favorite books with the school. This week, sophomores from Mr. Johnson’s classes share their favorite books.
Belleville West Competitor Wins a State Speech Title
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team concluded another winning season with a trip to the IHSA State Tournament on Friday and Saturday, February 17 and 18. The team qualified eleven events for the state tournament.
On Saturday evening, Bellevile West senior Tiffani Volkman was named the state champion in Radio Speaking. To advance to the state tournament, Tiffani earned first place in the regional competition and third place in the sectional competition. In her sophomore, junior, and senior years, Tiffani was one of the top 25 competitors in the Southern Illinois Speech and Acting League.
The team is coached by Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, Ms. Julie Schloesser, and Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger. Congratulations to Tiffani, all of the team members, and their coaches!
Harambee Sponsors “Taste of Soul Food” Today
Today, Belleville West Harambee sponsors “A Taste of Soul,” its annual Soul Food Day. Students can purchase a taste of various soul foods for 25 cents each. Wings will be available for 50 cents each. Belleville West students can experience “A Taste of Soul” during all lunch hours.
Musical Auditions Scheduled for Next Week
Belleville West Little Theatre will hold auditions for the spring musical, Little Shop of Horrors, next Tuesday, February 21, after school in room A111. Auditions packets are available in rooms B327, B330, and A111. Students in all grade levels are eligible to audition.
BW Classes Approach One Million Pages of Pleasure Reading
Once again this year, Belleville West students are reading! The BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
At the end of the fourth triad, the FRESHMAN CLASS has extended its lead, with 964,681 pages of pleasure reading—that’s fewer than 36,000 pages from a million! The freshmen read 253,874 pages in the fourth triad, a total of 454 pages per freshman. These freshman classes read the most pages per student in the fourth triad:
Mrs. Hunter—sixth hour: 1554 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—sixth hour: 1048 pages per student
Ms. Loesche—fourth hour: 1018 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—third hour: 834 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—fifth hour: 610 pages per student
Mrs. Short—second hour: 536 pages per student
Mr. Garland—fifth hour: 516 pages per student
Mrs. Hunter—first hour: 516 pages per student
At the end of the fourth triad, the SOPHOMORE CLASS maintains the second spot, with 891,798 pages of pleasure reading—that’s only 108,000 pages from a million! The sophomores read 234,663 pages in the fourth triad (their best triad so far this year), a total of 448 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes read the most pages per student in the fourth triad:
Ms. Schloesser—sixth hour: 1869 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser—third hour: 1129 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser—first hour: 1093 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser—seventh hour: 872 pages per student
Mr. Johnson—second hour: 865 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger—third hour: 794 pages per student
Mr. Johnson—first hour: 510 pages per student
The SENIOR CLASS has bounced back to third place at the end of the fourth triad, with 819,992 pages of pleasure reading. The seniors read 223,871 pages in the fourth triad (their best triad so far this year), a total of 446 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student in the fourth triad:
Mr. Lodle—fifth hour: 2852 pages per student
Mr. Lodle—sixth hour: 2289 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—first hour: 664 pages per student
Ms. Short—first hour: 527 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—seventh hour: 480 pages per student
The JUNIOR CLASS has slipped into fourth place at the end of the fourth triad, with 785,655 pages of pleasure reading. The juniors read 187,034 pages in the fourth triad, a total of 382 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student in the fourth triad:
Mr. Schobert—sixth hour: 835 pages per student
Mr. Spriggs—sixth hour: 773 pages per student
Mr. Spriggs—fifth hour: 770 pages per student
Mr. Brunner—second hour: 718 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—second hour: 626 pages per student
Mr. Spriggs—first hour: 626 pages per student
Mr. Garland—sixth hour: 513 pages per student
Mr. Brunner—first hour: 453 pages per student
The teachers in the ENGLISH DEPARTMENT read 17,711 pages of pleasure reading in the fourth triad. That’s an average of 886 pages per English teacher.
At this rate, the freshmen, sophomores, and seniors should be able to reach one million pages by the end of the fifth triad. And it’s possible that Belleville West students could finish the 2016-2017 school year with more pages of pleasure reading than ever before.

Speech Students Win Sectional Title, Advance to State Contest
The BW Speech and Acting Team won the IHSA Sectional Tournament at Normal West High School on Saturday, February 11. The following students, who won individual awards, qualified for the state competition on February 18 and 19:

Avery Reed — first place in Original Oratory
McKenzie Slack — first place in Prose Reading
Alayna Wells — first place in Poetry Reading
Kaylon Brown — third place in Oratorical Declamation
Wade Cook and McKenzie Slack — third place in Humorous Interpretation

Max Juhas — third place in Extemporaneous Speaking

In addition, the members of the Performance in the Round group won their event, also qualifying for the state tournament. The team is coached by Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, Ms. Julie Schloesser, and Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger.
