BW Theatre Stages Contest Drama This Thursday
Belleville West Little Theatre will present the annual contest drama on Thursday, March 16. This year’s offering is The Shadow Box, the Tony Award-winning drama by Michael Cristofer.
In The Shadow Box, quiet mountain cabins serve as hospice homes for three terminal cancer patients. The three are attended and visited by family members and close friends.
Agnes (freshman Johanna Holm) cares for her aging mother, Felicity (senior Janae Robinson). But Felicity’s dementia only makes their strained relationship more difficult.
Brian (sophomore Kaylon Brown) receives a visit from Beverly (junior McKenzie Slack), his firecracker of a former wife. She immediately clashes with Brian’s friend Mark (senior Julius Catchings).
Joe (junior Wade Cook) and Maggie (junior Cassidy Farrar) confront the prospect of telling their teen-aged son (freshman Alex Johnson) about Joe’s impending death.
2017 marks the fortieth anniversary of The Shadow Box, winner of both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play.
The contest play offers a unique opportunity for drama students. The play must be performed within a 40-minute time period, and student technicians have 20 minutes to set and clear the stage for performance. The Shadow Box will compete against other area schools to win a berth in the IHSA state tournament. This year’s sectional competition will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18.
The production is directed by Mr. John Lodle and Mr. Jamie Klein. The student director is senior Kenna Irvine. Student technical directors are senior Bre McCrary; juniors Nicole Barts, Allison Boggan, and Megan Zaiz; and sophomores Gabi Miller and Bailee Schobert.
The March 16 performance is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center, located at 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for adults.
