Junior Class Eyes One Million Pages of Pleasure Reading
Once again this year, Belleville West students are reading! The BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
At the end of the fourth triad, the JUNIOR CLASS is still in the lead. With 938,938 pages of pleasure reading, they already have one million pages in sight! The juniors read 206,687 pages in the fourth triad. That’s an impressive number, but it’s actually their lowest triad of the year, at an average of 423 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student in the fourth triad:
Mr. Garland—second hour: 1739 pages per student*
Mr. Garland—fifth hour: 935 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—first hour: 741 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—third hour: 635 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—second hour: 623 pages per student
Mr. Spriggs—sixth hour: 551 pages per student
Mrs. Story—second hour: 516 pages per student
Mr. Spriggs—first hour: 512 pages per student
* This is the highest average of ALL grade levels!
At the end of the fourth triad, the FRESHMAN CLASS stays in second place. With 768,484 pages of pleasure reading, the freshmen are more than three-quarters of the way to a million pages! The freshmen read 168,330 pages in the fourth triad, an average of 354 pages per freshman. These freshman classes read the most pages per student in the fourth triad:
Ms. Ursani—second hour: 774 pages per student
Mrs. Hunter—first hour: 766 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—first hour: 693 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—first hour: 502 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—second hour: 471 pages per student
The SOPHOMORE CLASS remains in third place, with 707,983 pages of pleasure reading. The sophomores read 174,834 pages in the fourth triad, an average of 329 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes read the most pages per student in the fourth triad:
Ms. Ursani—fifth hour: 836 pages per student
Mr. Jenkins—third hour: 701 pages per student
Mr. Johnson—second hour: 543 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers—seventh hour: 517 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers—first hour: 495 pages per student
The SENIOR CLASS is still at the back of the pack, with 679,882 pages of pleasure reading. That’s just past two-thirds of a million pages. The seniors read 164,978 pages in the fourth triad, an average of 387 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student in the fourth triad:
Mr. Lodle—sixth hour: 1318 pages per student
Mr. Lodle—fifth hour: 856 pages per student
Mrs. Lewis—second hour: 518 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—sixth hour: 467 pages per student
Mrs. Story—sixth hour: 456 pages per student
The teachers in the ENGLISH DEPARTMENT read 16,274 pages in the fourth triad, an average of 814 pages per English teacher—the best triad for the teachers so far this year.

Submissions for Literary Magazine Due Next Week
Page One, the Belleville West literary and art magazine, is currently accepting student submissions for the 2017-2018 edition. The magazine accepts submissions of original poetry, short fiction, essays, drama, photography, and art. Work must be submitted through the online Google forms.
The rules for submission are as follows:
1. Each student may submit up to three pieces in any one genre (prose, poetry, and art).
2. The student must use the Google form links to submit work.

3. The student must complete a separate form for each submission.

By submitting work to Page One, the student is granting permission for the work to be published in the school magazine. The student agrees to the following:
1. The submitted piece of writing or art is his/her own original work.
2. Page One reserves the right to edit the piece for content or length.
3. Page One does not have space to publish every piece that it receives.
Any student of Belleville West High School is eligible to submit work to Page One. The deadline for this year’s submissions is next Wednesday, February 21.
Harambee Members Present Annual Show of Song, Dance, and Drama
The Belleville West Harambee Club presented its 2018 show, “Stay Woke,” in the Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, February 7. This year’s show included performances in drama, poetry, music, and dance. The show also featured guest speaker Mr. Ken Jones. Members of the group will share their show with local grade school students in March.
The Harambee group is sponsored by Ms. Carnetta Chalmers.
Belleville West Readers Share Their Favorite Books
Throughout this year, Belleville West students are sharing their favorite books with the school. This week features recommendations from Mrs. Hunter’s freshman classes.
Students Share Poetry in Annual Library Event
On Friday, February 9, the student members of Page One (the Belleville West literary magazine) and the BW Library hosted the annual Poetry Cafe. The library served coffee and snacks while students read poems that they had written and poems by famous authors.
BW Speech Students Claim Sectional Title
At the IHSA Sectional Tournament hosted at Belleville West on Saturday, February 10, the Belleville West Speech and Acting Team won the championship title. Individual awards went to the following students, who will advance to next weekend’s IHSA State Tournament:
Kaylon Brown – first place in Original Oratory
Wade Cook and Cassidy Farrar – first place in Dramatic Duet Acting
Tyi’Air Eason and Danyelle Scott – first place in Humorous Duet Acting
McKenzie Slack – first place in Oratorical Declamation
Wade Cook – second place in Prose Reading
Sarah Hayden – second place in Humorous Interpretation
Delaney Holliday – second place in Poetry Reading
McKenzie Slack – second place in Dramatic Interpretation
Cassidy Farrar – third place in Radio Speaking
Emily Feazel – third place in Special Occasion Speaking
Jaylon Muchison – third place in Informative Speaking
Jaylon Muchison – third place in Original Comedy
In addition, the Performance in the Round group took first place in the sectional contest, qualifying for next weekend’s state competition. Members of the Performance in the Round cast are Emily Bechtold, Annabelle Brown, Owen Buescher, Ann Feazel, JoJo Holm, Alex Johnson, Isa Karathanos, Enma Koontz, Danny Laney, Naja Taylor, and Reily Wills.
The speech team is coached by Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, Ms. Julie Schloesser, and Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger. The Performance in the Round event is coached by Mrs. Melanie Jenkins and Mr. Tyler Herron.
Auditions Approach for Spring Musical
Auditions for this year’s spring musical, Ragtime, will be held on Tuesday, February 20, from 3:45 until 6:00 p.m. in room A111 (the choir room). This year’s show requires a large and diverse cast. Interested students may pick up audition packets in room B327, room B330, and room A111.
Library Offers Free SAT Prep Resources
The Belleville West Library has developed a page of online SAT prep resources for students. The page includes directions for the Khan Academy, testing dates, links to resources, and free phone apps.

In addition, the library has created an SAT prep table, which includes free practice tests and worksheets with tips and strategies.
This year’s SAT test will take place on Tuesday, April 10.
