BW English Students Partner with Grade School Classes
This year, approximately 20 Belleville West English classes are pairing with area grade school students to promote literacy and writing projects. The participating teachers are Ms. Comley, Mr. Garland, Mrs. Hunter, Mr. Johnson, Ms. Schloesser, Mr. Schobert, Mrs. Short, Mrs. Story, and Ms. Thurnau.
The idea to partner with grade school classes in the district came from a meeting of the English department over the summer. English teachers thought that partnering high school classes with grade school classes to interact throughout the school year could be fun and beneficial for students at both levels.
Belleville West students are working with second, third, and fourth grade students from Abraham Lincoln, Douglas, Ellis, Franklin, Henry Raab, Roosevelt, Union, and Westhaven Schools.
High school classes started by writing letters for their grade school “pen pals.” Some classes will work with their grade school buddies to write books together. Other classes plan to Skype together or share videos during the year. Some teachers are hoping that the high school students and the grade school students will be able to meet in person near the end of the school year.
In the pictures above, students from Mr. Johnson’s first hour English 3-4 class film videos to share with their grade school students.
