Sophomore Students Try “Speed Booking”
Remember when speed dating was popular? Students in Ms. Chalmers’s English 3-4 class are “speed booking.” Sitting in pairs, each student shares a favorite book from the fifth triad. One student in each pair then moves to another seat in the classroom so that everyone talks with different students. By the end of the hour, each student has eight to ten new books to try!
Belleville West Students Share Their Favorite Books
Throughout this year, Belleville West students are sharing their favorite books with the school. This week features recommendations from Mr. Jenkins’s sophomore classes.
Student Book Club Holds Discussion This Week
The Belleville West Book Club holds its final meeting of the year this Wednesday, April 4, at 4:00 p.m. at The Abbey. Students will discuss The Unseen World by Liz Moore. Any student who has read the book is welcome to participate.
Belleville West Celebrates Poetry in April
April marks the celebration of National Poetry Month. At Belleville West, English classes will observe the month by incorporating a new poem in class each day.
Students Select March Madness Winner
With voting ending on Wednesday, Belleville West students have selected a winner in the annual March Madness reading event. This year’s winner is American Street by Ibi Zoboi. Coincidentally, students will have the opportunity to participate in a Skype visit with Ms. Zoboi in May.
Names were drawn from all students who participated in the event, and the following students will receive free books: sophomore Kate Decareaux, sophomore Alondra Lopez-Pliego, junior Jacob Davis, and junior Ahmad Lathan. Thanks to everyone who voted!
March Madness Ends This Week
In celebration of March Madness, the BW English Department is sponsoring a contest for students to select their favorite piece of literature. Each week in March, students can vote for their favorite books by visiting this link. Every student who participates will be entered in a drawing, with the prize winners announced at the end of the month.
This week, the final two books face off: American Street by Ibi Zoboi vs. The Martian by Andy Weir. The deadline for voting is Wednesday, March 28.
Two BW Students Receive State Acting Honors
The Belleville West contest play production of Superior Donuts was one of twelve shows from the state to qualify for the IHSA State Drama Tournament, held at the Peoria Civic Center on March 23 and 24. Belleville West actors Wade Cook and Jaylon Muchison were named to the 2018 IHSA All-State Drama Cast. Only 30 actors from throughout the state received this recognition. Congratulations to them and to the entire cast and crew on an outstanding performance at the state tournament.
Contest Play Presents Special Encore Performance
The cast and crew of the 2018 contest drama, Superior Donuts, will present a special encore performance of the award-winning show this Wednesday, March 21, at 7:00 p.m. in the BW Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults.
The show will compete in the IHSA State Drama Contest at the Peoria Civic Center this Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24.
