Students Create Poetry on Classroom Bulletin Board
Ms. Rachael Phelps, the student teacher working this semester with Mr. Stephen Garland and Mr. Russ Reidelberger, helps her students celebrate National Poetry Month with push pin poetry. Using small, colorful cards—each of which contains a single word—students arrange various parts of speech on a bulletin board to create impromptu poetry.
Juniors Study Harlem Renaissance through Escape Room Activity
Mrs. Story’s English 5-6 students recently completed an escape room activity during their study of the Harlem Renaissance. In teams, they had to complete four tasks that covered the Great Migration, Prohibition and the Cotton Club, key figures in the Harlem Renaissance, and a secret poem that they decoded using symbols and clues from the readings.

Annual Shakespeare Fest is Right Around the Corner
The Belleville West English Department hosts the thirteenth annual BW Shakespeare Festival next Friday, April 20. This celebration of Shakespeare’s birthday will include the performance of scenes from his tragedies and comedies, original sonnets composed by senior students, modernized versions of Shakespeare’s plays, musical numbers from the Renaissance, Elizabethan writing projects, and booths with games and crafts.
Students Win Free Lunch after Completing SAT Workshops
61 Belleville West juniors completed the eleven-week SAT workshop presented by the English department this semester, and 18 of those students had perfect attendance. Da’Shon Dunn, James Hale, and Da’mon Watson had their names drawn from students with perfect attendance. Each received a $10 gift card to Wendy’s. Enjoy lunch!
Students Decorate Doors for National Poetry Month
Students in Ms. Schloesser’s English 3-4 Honors classes created a poetry collage on the classroom door in honor of National Poetry Month. Students selected favorite lines of poetry, wrote them on bright paper, and posted them outside the room.
Juniors Hold Commanding Lead in Million Page Challenge
Once again this year, Belleville West students are reading! The BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
At the end of the fifth triad, the JUNIOR CLASS has already passed one million pages! With 1,227,908 pages of pleasure reading, this year’s junior class could finish the year with the highest page total in the history of the million page challenge. The junior class read 259,951 pages in the fifth triad, an average of 532 pages per junior. These junior classes each read more than 500 pages per student in the fifth triad:
Mr. Garland—second hour: 2841 pages per student*
Mr. Spriggs—sixth hour: 811 pages per student
Mr. Spriggs—fifth hour: 773 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—third hour: 744 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—fifth hour: 708 pages per student
Mr. Brunner—second hour: 695 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—second hour: 687 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—seventh hour: 668 pages per student
Mr. Spriggs—first hour: 608 pages per student
Mr. Garland—fifth hour: 598 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—sixth hour: 565 pages per student
* This is the highest average of ALL grade levels!
At the end of the fifth triad, the FRESHMAN CLASS is very close to the goal, with 986,217 pages of pleasure reading. The freshmen read 201,145 pages in the fifth triad, an average of 442 pages per freshman. These freshman classes each read more than 500 pages per student in the fifth triad:
Mrs. Hunter—first hour: 1008 pages per student
Mrs. Hunter—sixth hour: 921 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—first hour: 791 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—second hour: 742 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—first hour: 552 pages per student
Mrs. Short—fourth hour: 525 pages per student
Mr. Garland—sixth hour: 505 pages per student
The SENIOR CLASS has passed the sophomore class to claim third place, with 909,070 pages of pleasure reading. The seniors read 216,825 pages in the fifth triad (their best triad of the year!), an average of 509 pages per senior. These senior classes each read more than 500 pages per student in the fifth triad:
Mr. Lodle—sixth hour: 1237 pages per student
Mr. Lodle—fifth hour: 1088 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—first hour: 867 pages per student
Mrs. Story—sixth hour: 702 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—sixth hour: 619 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—third hour: 551 pages per student
Mr. Garland—third hour: 541 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger—sixth hour: 535 pages per student
Mrs. Story—third hour: 534 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—seventh hour: 532 pages per student
The SOPHOMORE CLASS slipped into fourth place during the fifth triad, with 882,643 pages of pleasure reading. The sophomores read 174,660 pages in the fifth triad (their lowest total since the first triad of the year), an average of only 329 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes each read more than 500 pages per student in the fifth triad:
Ms. Schloesser—sixth hour: 520 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser—third hour: 507 pages per student
Mrs. Pettus—seventh hour: 504 pages per student
The teachers in the ENGLISH DEPARTMENT read 21,941 pages in the fifth triad, an average of 1097 pages per English teacher—the best triad for the teachers so far this year.

English Extracurriculars Welcome Eighth-Grade Students to West
Eighth-grade students from area schools visited Belleville West today for the annual Welcome West event. The incoming freshmen learned about the many opportunities available to them at West next year. Students from Hy News, Page One, Bellevinois, Harambee, Little Theatre, and Book Club all talked with students about their extracurricular organizations. Below, Katey Haas and Deosha Davis dress as “granny librarians” to introduce students to the BW Book Club.
