Three BW Students Win State-Wide Writing Awards
Each year, the Illinois Association of Teachers of English (IATE) sponsors a contest for student writers in middle school and high school. In this year’s “Best of Illinois Poetry and Prose” contest, three Belleville West seniors were recognized for their writing.
Ellie Buescher — first place in prose for “Panic and the Meaning of Life”
Cassidy Farrar — first place in prose for “Banjos for Breakfast”
Audrey Young — runner-up in prose for “A Growing Tree”
All three seniors will be featured in the fall IATE magazine, and the essays by Ellie and Cassidy will appear in print. Congratulations!

BW Junior Receives Harvard Book Award
Junior Hannah Witkus was awarded the 2017-2018 Harvard Prize Book for Belleville West High School. The Harvard Prize Book program was established by Harvard alumni in 1910. The Prize Book is awarded to an outstanding student in the junior class who displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.
Students Prepare for Honors English with Summer Reading
Students enrolled in an honors English course for the 2018-2019 school year will prepare for the new school year with a little summer reading. Summer reading information for each grade level is available in the corresponding link below.
Senior Students Finish Year of Exchanges with Second Grade Class
Throughout this school year, seniors in Mrs. Story’s Literary Explorations elective corresponded with pen pals in second grade at Abraham Lincoln School. Just before the year ended, the seniors received final letters (and art projects) from their second-grade pals.

CONGRATULATIONS, BELLEVILLE WEST READERS! As the 2017-2018 school year draws to a close, Belleville West students have read a grand total of 4,823,292 PAGES OF PLEASURE READING.
What does that mean?
If those pages were laid end-to-end, they would stretch over 647 MILES—that’s all the way from Belleville West to Dallas, Texas!
If one person wanted to read that many pages, he or she would need to read one page every minute for MORE THAN NINE YEARS! Without ever stopping to eat or sleep!
If you had one penny for every page read by a Belleville West student this year, you would have $48,232!

The CLASS OF 2019 (the JUNIOR class) read 1,477,286 pages of pleasure reading this year. That’s an average of 3021 pages per junior.

English Department Presents Fourth Annual Scholarship
The BW English Department presented the Laurie M. Bielong English Scholarship on Monday, May 7. The scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a college degree in an English-related field of study.
This year, the department recognized two worth candidates with scholarship awards. The recipients are Allison Boggan and Cassidy Farrar. Allison plans to attend Murray State University or SIU-Edwardsville, where she will study journalism. Cassidy plans to attend Missouri State University, where she plans a major in communication with minors in English and screenwriting.
BW Book Club Celebrates 20 Years

Students Celebrate Annual Day of Reading
On Thursday, May 10, Belleville West English classes held the annual Reading Celebration Day. Activities included a Skype visit with Ibi Zoboi (author of the novel American Street), presentations about favorite books, drawings for Kindles and books, independent reading time, word-related games, and snacks.
