Book Club Makes Spring Selection
Members of the BW Book Club have chosen David Grann’s Killers of the Flower Moon as their next selection. The group wil meet on Wednesday, April 3, for discussion. Copies of the book are available at the circulation desk in the BW Library.
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON by David Grann
In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, the Osage rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe.
Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. One of her relatives was shot. Another was poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more Osage were dying under mysterious circumstances, and many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered.
As the death toll rose, the newly created FBI took up the case, and the young director, J. Edgar Hoover, turned to a former Texas Ranger named Tom White to try to unravel the mystery. White put together an undercover team, including a Native American agent who infiltrated the region, and together with the Osage began to expose one of the most chilling conspiracies in American history.
English Students Enjoy Weekend Field Trip to St. Louis Art Museum
English teacher Mrs. Lannette Story and social studies teacher Ms. Amanda Borkowski organized a student trip to the St. Louis Art Museum on Saturday, February 2.
The group of students toured the exhibit of St. Louis paintings by Kehinde Wiley. Wiley is the first African-American artist to paint a presidential portrait. He created the portrait of President Obama that is part of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
On its web page, the St. Louis Art Museum includes this information about Wiley’s work and his St. Louis collection:
Kehinde Wiley creates large-scale oil paintings of contemporary African American subjects in poses that recall grand traditions of European and American portraiture. His models—real people dressed in their own clothing—assume poses adapted from historic paintings. Wiley’s portraits often feature ornate and decorative backgrounds, elements of which surround and sometimes weave around his subjects. His works address the politics of race and power in art, drawing attention to the pervasive lack of representation of people of color in the art world.
The Saint Louis Art Museum is proud to present Kehinde Wiley: Saint Louis, an exhibition that is deeply connected to this city and informed by visits Wiley made in 2017. Through a process of street casting, he invited strangers he met in neighborhoods in north St. Louis and Ferguson to pose for his paintings. Wiley then created eleven original portraits that are inspired by carefully chosen artworks in the Museum’s collection.

Mary Poppins Takes the Stage Tonight and Tomorrow
Belleville West Little Theatre presents the 2019 children’s play, Mary Poppins Jr., this Thursday and Friday, January 31 and February 1. Bring the entire family to enjoy this beloved classic, adapted from Disney’s Broadway production and the motion picture.

Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren’t the only ones upon whom she has a profound effect. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that “Anything can happen if you let it.”
The score of Mary Poppins Jr. features such favorite songs as “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Feed the Birds,” “Jolly Holiday,” “Step in Time,” “Let’s Go Fly a Kite,” and—of course—”Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”
