Belleville West Students Read More than 1.4 Million Pages in First Semester
At the start of the 2025-2026 academic year, the BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
The SENIOR CLASS finished the first semester with 323,938 pages of pleasure reading, with an average of 411 pages per senior in the second quarter. These senior classes read the most pages per student:
Mr. Reidelberger, seventh hour – 876 pages per student
Mr. Lodle, first hour – 780 pages per student
Mr. Herron, first hour – 777 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger, third hour – 755 pages per student
Mr. Lodle, second hour – 637 pages per student
Ms. Schaab, fifth hour – 617 pages per student
Ms. Schaab, fourth hour – 540 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger, fourth hour – 516 pages per student
Mrs. Story, second hour – 475 pages per student
Mrs. Lewis, third hour – 415 pages per student
The JUNIOR CLASS finished the first semester with 395,021 pages of pleasure reading, with an average of 520 pages per junior in the second quarter. These junior classes read the most pages per student:
Ms. Guebert, seventh hour – 2301 pages per student
Mr. Garland, first hour – 901 pages per student
Mr. Schobert, sixth hour – 636 pages per student
Mr. Schobert, fifth hour – 622 pages per student
Mr. Brunner, third hour – 577 pages per student

The SOPHOMORE CLASS finished the first semester with 432,648 pages of pleasure reading, with an average of 517 pages per sophomore in the second quarter. These sophomore classes read the most pages per student:

At the end of first semester, the sophomores have a commanding lead. They’re followed by the juniors, with the freshmen in third place and the seniors in fourth place. Visit the library, find some good books, and keep reading!
Harambee Students Organize Annual Toy Drive

Members of Harambee, the BW Black student organization, recently completed their December toy drive. They will donate the toys to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. (Harambee students are joined in this pictures by officers from the National English Honor Society, who held a holiday book drive for children.) The Harambee adviser is English teacher Ms. Carnetta Chalmers.
English Teachers Show Off Their Holiday Spirit

Last week, members of the BW English Department dressed up for the school’s Snow Much Spirit Week. Dress-up days included bright colors and tinsel. pajamas and crazy hair, red and white (candy canes), favorite holiday movie characterS, and ugly sweaters.
Speech Team Closes First Semester with Second Place Finish
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team took second place in another close finish at the Benton SISAL (Southern Illinois Speech and Acting League) Tournament on Saturday, December 13.

Belleville West Students Share Book Recommendations

Throughout this year, members of the BW chapter of the National English Honor Society are recommending books in the BW Library. The third set of selections features adventure fantasies, the City of Bones series (by Cassandra Clare), crime novels by April Henry, the Gone series (by Michael Grant), the Hunger Games series (by Suzanne Collins), the Immortals series (by Alyson Noel), and romantic comedies.
Speech Students Win Awards in Two Tournaments
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team split to compete in two tournaments this weekend. Students brought home awards from both the Elk Grove Espresso Tournament and the Waterloo Sisal Tournament on Saturday, December 6.

English Honor Society Donates Books this Holiday Season

The BW chapter of the National English Honor Society thanks all the students who donated nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars to the NEHS Holiday Book Drive. The group raised $1250 to purchase more than 100 new books for children this holiday season.
