BW Students Read 1.2 Million Pages in First Two Triads
At the start of the 2022-2023 academic year, the BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
The SENIOR CLASS finished the triad with 226,642 pages of pleasure reading. The seniors read 122,293 pages in the second triad, an average of 304 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student:
Mrs. Lewis, third hour – 729 pages per student
Ms. Schaab, fifth hour – 603 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, third hour – 536 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger, second hour – 468 pages per student
Mr. Brunner, fifth hour – 419 pages per student
Mr. Lode, fifth hour – 408 pages per student
The JUNIOR CLASS finished the triad with 272,370 pages of pleasure reading. The juniors read 137,196 pages in the second triad, an average of 319 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student:
Mr. Schobert, sixth hour – 667 pages per student
Mr. Garland, third hour – 525 pages per student
Mr. Garland, second hour – 492 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, sixth hour – 462 pages per student
Mr. Brunner, first hour – 449 pages per student
Mr. Schobert, fifth hour – 439 pages per student
Ms. Guebert, fifth hour – 430 pages per student
Mr. Garland, fifth hour – 409 pages per student
The SOPHOMORE CLASS finished the triad with 366,628 pages of pleasure reading. The sophomores read 182,270 pages in the second triad, an average of 368 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes read the moist pages per student:
Mr. Johnson, second hour – 738 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser, seventh hour – 707 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, first hour – 661 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, second hour – 573 pages per student
Ms. Kurtz, first hour – 556 pages per student
Ms. Kurtz, third hour – 523 pages per student
Ms. Kurtz, seventh hour – 512 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser, second hour – 486 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser, seventh hour – 452 pages per student
The FRESHMAN CLASS finished the triad with 339,225 pages of pleasure reading. The freshmen read 190,378 pages in the second triad, an average of 361 pages per freshmen. These freshman classes read the most pages per student:
Ms. Thurnau, second hour – 791 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, first hour – 689 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, fifth hour – 612 pages per student
Mrs. Coyne, first hour – 596 pages per student
Ms. Mims, seventh hour – 514 pages per student
Ms. Mims, sixth hour – 453 pages per student

Belleville West Readers Share their Favorite Books
Throughout this year, members of the BW chapter of the National English Honor Society are sharing their favorite books with the school.

Speech Students Take 35 Awards in First Tournament of Season

The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team took third place in this year’s opening SISAL (Southern Illinois Speech and Acting League) tournament. The competition took place at Waterloo High School on Saturday, November 5.
The following students won individual awards in the varsity division:

Eric Perschbacher – third place in Extemporaneous Speaking

Sophomores Participate in BW Speaker Series
On Thursday, November 3, Mr. Nick Johnson hosted the second guest in the Speaker Series at Belleville West. Mr. Akeem Shannon, an entrepreneur and inventor of Flipstik, spoke to BW sophomores about learning from failures, getting in doors that “aren’t for them,” and taking care of their mental health.

Thespian Troupe Welcomes New Members

After the final performance of the fall play on October 15, Belleville West Thespian Troupe #369 welcomed two new members: junior Camryn Houk and senior Aloisia Rickert. Each of these students has devoted more than 300 hours to the theatre program at Belleville West, with at least 150 of those hours behind the scenes (on technical crews, as student directors, or at work days). Congratulations!
