BW Students Read almost Two Million Pages in First Semester
At the start of the 2022-2023 academic year, the BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
The SENIOR CLASS finished the semester with 362,772 pages of pleasure reading. The seniors read 136,130 pages in the third triad (their best triad this year!), an average of 339 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student:
Mr. Lodle, sixth hour – 591 pages per student
Mr. Lodle, fifth hour – 532 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, seventh hour – 516 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, third hour – 441 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger, third hour – 402 pages per student
The JUNIOR CLASS finished the semester with 423,384 pages of pleasure reading. The juniors read 151,014 pages in the third triad (their best triad this year!), an average of 351 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student:
Mr. Schobert, sixth hour – 885 pages per student
Mr. Schobert, third hour – 699 pages per student
Mr. Garland, second hour – 679 pages per student
Mr. Garland, third hour – 621 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, sixth hour – 447 pages per student
Mr. Schobert, fifth hour – 429 pages per student
Mr. Brunner, first hour – 412 pages per student
Mr. Schobert, second hour – 400 pages per student
The SOPHOMORE CLASS finished the semester with 630,880 pages of pleasure reading. The sophomores read 264,252 pages in the third triad (their best triad this year!), an average of 534 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes read the most pages per student:
Mr. Johnson, second hour – 4649 pages per student (not a typo!)
Ms. Schloesser, seventh hour – 654 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, first hour – 648 pages per student
Ms. Chalmers, second hour – 595 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser, sixth hour – 529 pages per student
Ms. Kurtz, first hour – 507 pages per student
Ms. Kurtz, third hour – 496 pages per student
Mr. Johnson, fourth hour – 448 pages per student
Dr. Ursani, sixth hour – 417 pages per student
The FRESHMAN CLASS finished the semester with 551,319 pages of pleasure reading. The freshmen read 212,094 pages in the third triad (their best triad this year!), an average of 402 pages per freshmen. These freshman classes read the most pages per student:
Ms. Thurnau, first hour – 1720 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, second hour – 894 pages per student
Mrs. Hunter, fourth hour – 714 pages per student
Mrs. Coyne, first hour – 550 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau, fifth hour – 539 pages per student

Harambee Students Organize Annual Toy Drive

Members of Harambee, the BW Black student organization, collected more than 100 new toys in their December toy drive. They will donate the toys to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. (Harambee students are joined in this picture by officers from the National English Honor Society, who held a holiday book drive for children.) The Harambee adviser is English teacher Ms. Carnetta Chalmers.

English Honor Society Gives Books this Holiday Season
The BW chapter of the National English Honor Society thanks all the students who donated nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars to the NEHS holiday book drive. The group raised over $775 to purchase new books for children this holiday season.

Speech Team Takes Awards at Two Weekend Tournaments
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team split in half on Saturday, December 3, competing in two tournaments and placing in both. Team members who competed in the Elk Grove Varsity Tournament took fifth place overall. Team members who competed in the Carbondale SISAL Tournament took fourth place overall.

Little Theatre Holds Contest Play Auditions This Week

Auditions for the 2023 contest drama, Over the Tavern, will be held virtually all this week. Students in all grade levels are eligible to audition. Interested students may scan the QR code on posters around school for audition information and materials. Audition forms and videos are due by this Friday, December 2.
