Belleville West Stages Comic Drama this Month

Belleville West Little Theatre will present the annual contest drama on Thursday, March 16. This year’s offering is Over the Tavern, a comic drama by Tom Dudzick.
In that most idealized period of 20th-century America, the Eisenhower years of the 1950s, the Pazinski family has a lot going on in their cramped Buffalo apartment. The youngest of the bunch, Rudy (sophomore Eric Perschbacher), is a smart, wise-cracking kid who’s starting to question family values and his family’s Catholic church.
When Rudy goes up against the ruler-wielding Sister Clarissa (senior Ava Combs) and announces that instead of being confirmed he’d rather shop around for a more “fun” religion, trouble breaks out. This warm and hilarious drama offers a timeless look at family and growing up.
Other cast members include seniors Jerry Aplin, Brock Becker, Avita Hall, and Wini James; junior Ryann Gordon; and sophomores Theo Rickert and Jordyn Struense.
The contest play offers a unique opportunity for drama students. The play must be performed within a 40-minute time period, and student technicians have 20 minutes to set and clear the stage for performance. Over the Tavern will compete against other area schools to win a berth in the IHSA state tournament. This year’s sectional competition will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18.
The production is directed by Mr. John Lodle and Mr. Jamie Klein. The student directors are seniors Avita Hall, Wini James, and Emma Loewe; junior Camryn Houk; and sophomores Natalie Hall and Jordyn Struense. Student technical directors are seniors Ella Davis, Alexis Sheldon, and Zoe Wallis; and sophomores Quin Brown, Teddi Lacey, and Sean Teutrine.
The March 16 performance is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center, located at 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults.
