Belleville West Students Share Reading Recommendations
Throughout this year, members of the BW chapter of the National English Honor Society are creating book displays in the BW Library. The fifth set of books features the Hunger Games series, “Books that Made Me Cry,” social realism, crime stories, books about tech developments and pioneers, mysteries, and novels by Karen M. McManus. For each set of book recommendations, the library staff will select a winning display. The winners of the fifth award are seniors Megan Bernasco and Jack Stokes.
BW Book Club Meets This Week
The Belleville West Book Club will meet this Wednesday, January 10, to discuss the novel The Last Ballad by Wiley Cash. Copies of the book are available for check-out at the circulation desk in the BW Library. All Belleville West students are welcome to participate.

Speech Team Students Score Awards at Competitive Tournament
Members of the BW Speech and Acting Team traveled north to compete in the Reed Custer New Year Invitational on Saturday, January 6. They competed against some of the top teams in the state.
The following students won individual awards:

Eleanor Schmitz – fourth place in Humorous Interpretation

Belleville West Students Read 1.7 Million Pages in First Semester
At the start of the 2023-2024 academic year, the BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
The SENIOR CLASS finished first semester with 416,183 pages. They read 223,351 pages of pleasure reading during the second quarter. That’s an average of 591 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student:
Ms. Schaab, fourth hour – 1369 pages
Mr. Lodle, first hour – 1310 pages
Ms. Thurnau, seventh hour – 1095 pages
Mr. Lodle, second hour – 817 pages
Mrs. Story, second hour – 752 pages
Mrs. Lewis, fourth hour – 746 pages
Ms. Thurnau, fifth hour – 675 pages
Mrs. Story, third hour – 661 pages
Ms. Schaab, fifth hour – 548 pages
The JUNIOR CLASS finished first semester with 440,286 pages. They read 258,495 pages of pleasure reading during the second quarter. That’s an average of 573 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student:

In the second quarter, every class read more pages than during the first quarter! Compared to the first quarter, the sophomores read over 22,000 pages more. The seniors read over 30,000 pages more. The juniors read over 76,000 pages more. And the freshmen read over 88,000 more! If the classes keep building their reading pace like this, they can reach one million pages by the end of the year. Visit the library, find some good books, and keep reading!

The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team won the Purple Invitational at Jacksonville High School on Saturday, December 16.

Harambee Students Organize Annual Toy Drive

Members of Harambee, the BW Black student organization, recently completed their December toy drive. They will donate the toys to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. (Harambee students are joined in these pictures by officers from the National English Honor Society, who held a holiday book drive for children.) The Harambee adviser is English teacher Ms. Carnetta Chalmers.
