Student Journalist Wins State Award

Belleville West junior Jacob Paule won fifth place in Editorial Writing at the IHSA State Journalism Competition on Friday, April 24. Jacob and four other Belleville West students–all members of the Hy News and Bellevinois–qualified for the state tournament. They are advised by English teachers Mr. Stephen Garland and Mrs. Ashley Short. Congratulations!
Student Journalists Advance to State Contest in Six Events

At the IHSA Sectional Journalism Contest on April 11, five Belleville West students qualified for the state competition:
Elena Geppert — first place in Headline Writing
Elena Geppert — second place in News Writing
Zoe Haynes — second place in Photo Story Telling
Emma Johnson — second place in Yearbook Caption Writing
Karolina North — second place in Yearbook Copy Writing
Jacob Paule — third place in Editorial Writing
These students will compete today in the IHSA State Journalism Competition at Heartland Community College in Normal. These students are advised by Mr. Stephen Garland (Hy News, the BW student newspaper) and Mrs. Ashley Short (Bellevinois, the BW yearbook).
Little Theatre Presents Spring Musical This Weekend

Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the wild and vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. How will this naïve newbie rise to the top of the popularity pecking order? By taking on The Plastics, a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady and her friends devise a “Revenge Party” to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a queen bee without getting stung.
Belleville West Little Theatre presents Mean Girls, the Tony-nominated musical based on the hit movie from Tina Fey, on April 23, 24, and 25. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students and children. Advance tickets are now on sale at this link.
Belleville West Students Share Book Recommendations

Throughout this year, members of the BW chapter of the National English Honor Society are recommending books in the BW Library. The tenth set of selections features self-help books, books about serial killers, books about zoology and ecology, books about sacrifice, books about war, novels by Sarah J. Maas, and the I Survived series.
Seniors Score Awards in SIUE Writing Contest

Congratulations to the following Belleville West seniors, who won awards in the 2026 SIUE High School Writers Contest: A’Ryah Hoefler, first place in nonfiction; Katie Lautner, first place in poetry; Noura Ayadi, second place in nonfiction; Anthony Tillman, third place in nonfiction. Each of these students will receive a scholarship from SIUE.

Students Enjoy Twenty-First Annual Shakespeare Fest

On Friday, April 10, students participated in the 21st Annual Belleville West Shakespeare Festival. Classes watched performances in the PAC, including scenes from Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, Macbeth, Much Ado about Nothing, and Othello. Students then enjoyed crafts, games, activities, puzzles, and trivia contests–all inspired by Shakespeare and his plays–in the Belleville West library.
Students Select Winner in March Madness Reading Event

With voting closed in the 2026 BW March Madness Reading Event, we have a winner! In an extremely close final round, Belleville West readers selected Promise Boys by Nick Brooks as their favorite book.
All students who participated in the event were entered in a prize drawing. The prize winners (who were selected randomly) are Bryson Archer, De’Moria Beverly, Courtney Coleman, Damian Forgue, Ja’myla Gardner, Lily Glauber, Courtney Mason, Maggie Powers, Xzavier Singleton, and Taylor Walker.

Belleville West Students Share Book Recommendations

Throughout this year, members of the BW chapter of the National English Honor Society are recommending books in the BW Library. The ninth set of selections features inspirational sports stories, books about nature and the climate, books recommended by parents, memoirs, the After series, the Divergent series, the Hunger Games series, and the Unwind series.
Voting in Read for a Lifetime Program Closes This Week
Students who have read any four or more books from this year’s Read for a Lifetime list may vote for their favorite book at this link by April 10. Students who participate in the program, which is sponsored by the state of Illinois, will receive a state certificate and an invitation to breakfast in the BW Library in May.
