Speech Team Competitors Take Second Place at Weekend Tournament
With a smaller team because of the winter weather, the Belleville West Speech and Acting Team took second place at the Glenwood SISAL Tournament in Chatham on Saturday, January 11.
The following students won individual awards in the varsity division:

BW Book Club Meets Next Week
The Belleville West Book Club will meet next Wednesday, January 15, to discuss the novel The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Copies of the book are available for check-out at the circulation desk in the BW Library. All Belleville West students are welcome to participate.

During the short days of the winter months, don’t be afraid of the dark. Brighten your day with one of these books, all of which have the word “dark” in the title.
Belleville West Students Clear 1.5 Million Pages in First Semester
At the start of the 2024-2025 academic year, the BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
The SENIOR CLASS finished the semester with 336,119 pages of pleasure reading. They read 163,273 pages in the second quarter, an average of 417 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student:
Mr. Lodle, second hour – 984 pages per student
Mr. Reidelberger, third hour – 914 pages per student
Ms. Schaab, fourth hour – 623 pages per student
Mr. Armknecht, fourth hour – 537 pages per student
Mr. Lodle, first hour – 537 pages per student
Mr. Herron, second hour – 524 pages per student
Mrs. Story, sixth hour – 506 pages per student
Mrs. Lewis, fifth hour – 487 pages per student
Mrs. Story, seventh hour – 472 pages per student

The JUNIOR CLASS finished the semester with 485,983 pages of pleasure reading. They read 253,583 pages in the second quarter, an average of 579 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student:

Students Present Living Museum of African American Authors

Last Friday, students in the African American Literature course shared presentations on Black authors with other classes. Featured authors included Maya Angelou, Ralph Ellison, Tiffany D. Jackson, Toni Morrison, Jason Reynolds, Angie Thomas and Ibi Zoboi.
Harambee Students Organize Annual Toy Drive

Members of Harambee, the BW Black student organization, recently completed their December toy drive. They will donate the toys to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organization. (Harambee students are joined in these pictures by officers from the National English Honor Society, who held a holiday book drive for children.) The Harambee adviser is English teacher Ms. Carnetta Chalmers.
Speech Team Competitors Win Awards at Two Weekend Tournaments

The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team split into two groups on Saturday, December 14, in order to compete in two tournaments. Varsity team members competed at the Naperville Tournament of Roses, where they took seventh place in a very competitive field. Younger members of the team competed at the SISAL Tournament in Benton.
