BW Book Club makes ROOM for next discussion
ROOM by Emma Donoghue
In many ways, Jack is a typical five-year-old. He likes to read books, watch TV, and play games with his mother. But Jack is different in a big way—he has lived his entire life in a single room, sharing the tiny space with only his mother and an unnerving nighttime visitor known as Old Nick. For Jack, Room is the only world he knows, but for Ma, it is a prison in which she has tried to craft a normal life for her son. Despite its profoundly disturbing premise, Emma Donoghue’s Room is rife with moments of hope and beauty and the dogged determination to live, even in the most desolate circumstances. A stunning and original novel of survival in captivity, readers who enter Room will leave staggered, as though, like Jack, they are seeing the world for the very first time.
The Diary of Anne Frank
The Belleville West Little Theatre will present its annual fall play on Thursday-Saturday, October 13, 14, and 15. This year’s offering is The Diary of Anne Frank, the award-winning drama by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.
In this powerful adaptation of her famous diary, Anne Frank (sophomore Taylor Damann) emerges from history as a living, lyrical, intensely gifted young girl. She confronts her rapidly changing life and the increasing horror of her time with astonishing honesty, wit, and determination.
This impassioned drama portrays Anne Frank’s family (senior Zac Chamberlin, senior Katherine Eckert, junior Taylor Keel), forced to hide from the Nazis in a conealed storage attic with four other people—the Van Daan family (senior Sterling Beckmann, senior Jorden Guldner, sophomore Dean Fults) and Mr. Dussel (senior David Felts). The Diary of Anne Frank captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence—their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief.
Each day of these two dark years, Anne’s voice shines through: “I want to go on living even after my death!” The Diary of Anne Frank won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Tony Award for Best Play.
The production is directed by Ms. Laurie Bielong and Mr. John Lodle. The student directors are seniors Cornelius Allen and Woody Gardner. Student technical directors are seniors Eli Bernstein, Alex Knapp, and Morgan Munro; juniors Emily Adams and Becca Rockwell; and sophomore Nick Klein.
Performances are at 7:00 each evening in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center, located at 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults.
Freshman and Sophomore Classes READ!
In their challenge to read one million pages of pleasure reading this year, the freshman and sophomore classes are off to an incredible start.
The class of 2014 (the sophomore class) read 181,992 pages of pleasure reading during the first triad! That’s an average of 316 pages per student. (As a point of comparison, the class of 2014 had read 117,673 pages by this time last year. That’s 64,319 more pages this year.) Way to go, sophomores!
The sophomore classes with the highest reading totals for the first triad are:
Ms. Bielong’s fifth hour class: 16,578 pages
Mrs. Spriggs’s third hour class: 16,104 pages
Mr. Jenkins’s second hour class: 14,446 pages
Mr. Reidelberger’s second hour class: 14,008 pages
Mrs. Lewis’s first hour class: 13,573 pages
Ms. Bielong’s sixth hour class: 10, 834 pages
Mr. Jenkins’s seventh hour class: 10,671 pages
The class of 2015 (the freshman class) read 190,086 pages of pleasure reading during the first triad! That’s an average of 363 pages per student. That’s even more pages—8,094 pages, to be exact—than the class of 2014, which is a slightly larger group of students. Way to go, freshmen!
The freshman classes with the highest reading totals for the first triad are:
Mrs. Matysik’s fifth hour class: 29,332 pages
Mrs. Matysik’s sixth hour class: 18,772 pages
Mrs. Thurnau’s second hour class: 16,245 pages
Ms. Bielong’s fourth hour class: 12,533 pages
Mrs. Matysik’s first hour class: 11,995 pages
Mrs. Thurnau’s sixth hour class: 10,530 pages
This year, the Belleville West teachers are also keeping track of how much they read. The teachers read 45,843 pages of pleasure reading during the first triad! That’s an average of 340 pages per teacher. (That means that the teachers read more per person than the sophomores—but not as much as the freshmen.) The top faculty readers were the members of the library staff, who read 4,277 pages (or 1,426 pages per person).
Freshmen, can you continue to read more than the sophomores and the teachers? Sophomores, can you catch the freshmen? Teachers, can you read more pages per person than the freshmen?
Keep reading, Belleville West!
The “48-Hour” Film Project
These Mass Media groups had a simple direction: create a roughly one-minute sequence that evokes a different affective response (a specific emotion) from the viewer, selected blindly. BUT IT WASN’T THAT SIMPLE– they all had to incorporate the same prop and the same line on dialogue in their scene. Adding to the challenge, each group selected a unique camera angle AND editing technique they had to incorporate. They also had a grueling schedule– one period to plan, one period to shoot, and three periods to edit. Although each group member edited her scene, the group voted on which one would be presented for contest.
Here are this “48 hour” scenes from previous semesters:
ALL VIDEOS WERE VIEWED AND VOTED ON BY BOTH MASS MEDIA CLASSES. “BEST IN SHOW” IS DETERMINED BY THE HIGHER SCORE ON BEST OVERALL SCENE BETWEEN BOTH CLASSES.
