Speech Competitors Qualify for National Tournament

Members of the Belleville West Speech and Acting Team competed in the NSDA (National Speech and Debate Association) Greater Illinois District Tournament on Saturday, March 8. The following students qualified for the NSDA National Tournament in June:
Peyton Long and Eleanor Schmitz — first place in Duo Interpretation
Theo Rickert — first place in Program Oral Interpretation
Olivia Bush — third place in Dramatic Interpretation
Natalie Hall — third place in Program Oral Interpretation
The team coaches are Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Tyler Herron, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger, and Mrs. Anna Schlich.
Annual March Madness Event Starts This Week
In celebration of March Madness, the BW English Department invites students to participate in a game of brackets to select their favorite book from the BW Library. Each week in March, students can vote for their favorite books by visiting this link. Every student who participates will be entered in a drawing, with the prize winners announced at the end of the month. The deadline for the first week of voting is Thursday, March 6.

Student Journalists Compete in SISPA Conference
Students from the Bellevinois (the Bellevillle West yearbook) and the Hy News (the Belleville West newspaper) traveled to SIUC on Wednesday, February 26, to participate in the annual Southern Illinois Scholastic Press Association’s winter conference.
The following students won individual awards in the journalism competition:
Lillian Averbeck — first place in Yearbook Theme Development
Madilyn Averbeck — first place in Yearbook Theme Development
Colton Walls — first place in Ad Design
Emma Johnson — second place in Yearbook Captions
Sofia Price — second place in Yearbook Feature Copy
Anyla Jones — third place in Photo Storytelling
The yearbook adviser is Mrs. Ashley Short. The newspaper adviser is Mr. Stephen Garland.
Belleville West Students Share Reading Recommendations

Throughout this year, members of the BW chapter of the National English Honor Society are creating book displays in the BW Library. The seventh set of selections features books by AAPI authors, Black romances, books about mental health, books that are the first in a series, dystopian novels, LGBTQ stories (that are not romances), and thrillers.
Speech Competitor Finishes Third in State

Congratulations to senior Eleanor Schmitz! As a member of the BW Speech and Acting Team, she took third place in Humorous Interpretation at the IHSA State Speech Tournament. Last year, she took fifth place in the state in the same event. The team coaches are Mr. Adam Jenkins, Mr. Tyler Herron, Mrs. Leigh Reidelberger, Mr. Russ Reidelberger, and Mrs. Anna Schlich.
Literary Magazine Garners Another National Award

Congratulations to the authors, artists, photographers, composers, and editors who contributed to the 2024 edition of Page One. The Belleville West literary and art magazine was recognized as a SUPERIOR publication in the NCTE REALM (Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines) program.
Student Authors, Artists, and Musicians can Submit Work to BW Magazine

Page One, the Belleville West literary and art magazine, is now accepting submissions for its 2025 edition. Students in all grade levels can submit short stories, poetry, creative nonfiction, art, photography, and musical compositions at this link. Submissions are due by next Friday, February 28.
Speech Team Advances Seven Events to State Contest
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team took third place in the 2025 IHSA Sectional at Belleville West on Saturday, February 15.
The following students earned individual awards and will advance to next weekend’s IHSA State Tournament:
Peyton Long and Eleanor Schmitz – first place in Humorous Duet Acting
Peyton Long – first place in Original Comedy
Eleanor Schmitz – first place in Humorous Interpretation
Bree Aplin – second place in Informative Speaking
Natalie Hall and Sylvi Segraves – second place in Dramatic Duet Acting
Morgan Seagle – second place in Oratorical Declamation
In addition, the Performance in the Round cast took second place in their event and will advance to next weekend’s IHSA State Tournament.

Students who have read any four or more books from this year’s Abraham Lincoln reading list can vote for their favorite at this link through March 1. The winner of the state-wide vote will be announced in April.
