First Book of the Year for BW Book Club
The Belleville West Book Club will meet on Wednesday, October 3, to discuss Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys. Any student interested in Book Club can stop in room B325 or room B330 for more information. Copies of the first book are available for check-out in the BW Library.
BETWEEN SHADES OF GRAY
Fifteen-year-old Lina is a Lithuanian girl living an ordinary life–until Soviet officers invade her home and tear her family apart. Separated from her father and forced onto a crowded train, Lina, her mother, and her young brother make their way to a Siberian work camp, where they are forced to fight for their lives. Lina finds solace in her art, documenting these events by drawing. Risking everything, she imbeds clues in her drawings of their location and secretly passes them along, hoping her drawings will make their way to her father’s prison camp. But will strength, love, and hope be enough for Lina and her family to survive?
This powerful tale of heartbreak and hope is sure to haunt readers long after they finish the last page.

Varsity Football Players Meet Author
Members of the varsity football team concluded their “One Book, One Team” summer reading event with a Skype visit with author Chris Crutcher.
Over the past month, team members, their coaches, library staff members, and English teachers read Crutcher’s book Deadline. This novel tells the story of high school senior Ben Wolf. When Ben learns that he has a terminal disease, he decides to live his final year without regrets. He tries out for the football team, challenges the close-minded attitude of some of his classmates, and asks the girl of his dreams to the homecoming dance.
After a lunch of pizza, members of the BW footballl team had the opportunity to visit with author Chris Crutcher via Skype. Several players (and one of the coaches, Mr. Bob Flake) even had the chance to ask the author questions about his book.
Thanks to Mrs. Mary Barteau (BW library director), Mr. Cameron Pettus (head football coach), the football coaching staff, the English department, and the young men of the BW football team for creating this unique experience!
