BW Book Club Chooses for April
At last night’s meeting, members of the BW Book Club chose Madeline Miller’s novel The Song of Achilles for the next discussion. The Book Club will meet on Wednesday, April 10, to discuss the book.
THE SONG OF ACHILLES by Madeline Miller
Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals. When word comes that Helen if Sparta has been kidnapped, the men of Greece, bound by blood and oath, must lay siege to Troy in her name. Seduced by the promise of a glorious destiny, Achilles joins their cause; torn between love and fear for this friend, Patroclus follows.
BW Readers Finish Strong First Semester
First semester is almost over, and the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are all on pace to read more than one million pages this year!
At the end of the third triad, the freshman class has read the most total pages this semester, with 656,358 pages of pleasure reading. (That’s almost two-thirds of the way to one million pages in only the first semester!) The freshmen read 246,540 pages in just the third triad, the most pages of any class during any triad this semester. That’s an average of 383 pages per freshman during the third triad. These freshman classes read the most pages during the first semester:
Mrs. Thurnau—5th hour: 54,785 pages
Ms. Ursani—2nd hour: 51,971 pages
Mrs. Thurnau—6th hour: 43,997 pages
Mrs. Thurnau—3rd hour: 43,948 pages
Ms. Ursani—1st hour: 43,647 pages
Mrs. Spriggs—1st hour: 42,713 pages
Ms. Bielong—1st hour: 34,290 pages
Mr. Garland—7th hour: 32,071 pages
The junior class is just behind the freshmen, with 587,764 pages of pleasure reading for the first semester. The juniors read 185,000 pages in the third triad. That’s an average of 357 pages per junior during the third triad. (Sorry, juniors, but that means that the freshmen read the most pages and that the sophomores read the most pages per student during the third triad!) These junior classes read the most pages during the first semester:
Ms. Sage—3rd hour: 45,492 pages
Ms. Chalmers—4th hour: 44,791 pages
Ms. Chalmers—6th hour: 43,046 pages
Mr. Spriggs—5th hour: 39,315 pages
Dr. Roberts—6th hour: 38,544 pages
Mr. Brunner—2nd hour: 35,948 pages
Ms. Hoelscher—1st hour: 30,377 pages
The sophomore class is better than half-way to the goal, with 510,250 pages of pleasure reading for the first semester. The sophomores read 215,330 pages in just the third triad—their highest total for the year and better than the junior class for this triad. That’s an average of 388 pages per sophomore during the third triad—the highest average per student of all three classes. These sophomore classes read the most pages during the first semester:
Ms. Bielong—6th hour: 86,513 pages
Mr. Reidelberger—3rd hour: 39,607 pages
Mrs. Hunter—4th hour: 35,778 pages
Ms. Bielong—5th hour: 34,395 pages
Ms. Chalmers—2nd hour: 32,580 pages
Mr. Spriggs—7th hour: 31,604 pages
The teachers in the English department read 15,121 pages during the third triad—an average of 720 pages per teacher!
Can the freshmen continue to open their lead over the juniors and sophomores? Can the sophomores continue their incredible pace from the third triad? Can the juniors regain their spot as the pages-per-student leaders of the competition?
Don’t forget to take your pleasure reading books home with you for the winter break. Any pages you read over the break will count toward your class’s fourth triad total.
Keep reading, Belleville West!
