Book Club Makes January Reading Selection
Members of the Belleville West Book Club have selected The Heretic’s Daughter, a novel by Kathleen Kent, for their next discussion. The group will meet at The Abbey on Wednesday, January 8, to discuss the book. Copies of the novel are now available at the circulation desk in the BW Library.
THE HERETIC’S DAUGHTER
by Kathleen Kent
Martha Carrier was one of the first women to be accused, tried, and hanged as a witch in Salem, Massachusetts. Like her mother, young Sarah Carrier is bright and willful, openly challenging the small, brutal world in which they live. Often at odds with one another, mother and daughter are forced to stand together against the escalating hysteria of the trials and the superstitious tyranny that led to the torture and imprisonment of more than 200 people accused of witchcraft. This is the story of Martha’s courageous defiance and ultimate death, as told by the daughter who survived.

Belleville West Readers Pick Up the Pace
The freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors have all picked up their reading pace! This year, the BW English Department challenged the class of 2014, the class of 2015, the class of 2016, and the class of 2017 to each read one million pages of pleasure reading. In the second triad, each class read more pages than during the first triad; each class has also read more than one-third of one million pages, so they’re all on pace to break one million pages again this year.
At the end of the second triad, the freshman class has read the most total pages, with 434,551 pages of pleasure reading. (The freshmen read 271,604 pages in just the second triad. That’s 108,657 more pages than they read during the first triad! That’s an average of 438 pages per freshman during the second triad.)
These freshman classes read the most pages per student during the second triad:

That’s 48,044 more pages than they read during the first triad. That’s an average of 431 pages per junior during the second triad—just seven pages fewer per student than the freshman class!)

Can the freshmen maintain their overall lead during the third triad? Can the seniors continue to lead in pages per student? Can the juniors overtake the sophomores? Can the teachers find a little more time for some good books?

Trivia Night Raises Funds for Scholarship, BW Newspaper
The twelfth annual Belleville West Trivia Night, held on November 2, raised funds for the BW English Department Scholarship and the BW student newspaper. The sponsors thank all the community members and students who participated in the event, the Hy News staff members who worked at the event, the teachers who assisted throughout the night (Ms. Bielong, Mr. Christensen, Mrs. Dachsteiner, and Mr. Garland), and the local businesses that donated door prizes. Thanks for a successful night!
