Little Theatre Closes 2013-2014 Season with Chicago
The Belleville West Little Theatre will present its annual musical on Thursday through Saturday, May 1 through 3. This year’s production is Chicago.
Chicago is the winner of six Tony awards, including the 1997 Tony for Best Revival of a Musical. The popular show is the basis for the Oscar-winning movie featuring Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Richard Gere, and Queen Latifah.
At the height of the roaring twenties, chorus girl Roxie Hart (senior Jennifer Riess) murders her faithless lover. She convinces her hapless husband Amos (senior Jacob Cange) to take the rap—until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie.
Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie meets Velma Kelly (senior Reagan Deschaine), another “Merry Murderess.” The two vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the American Dream: fame, fortune, and acquittal.
This sharp-edged satire features a dazzling score by John Kander and Freb Ebb. It was originally directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse. The show includes such memorable songs as “All that Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango,” “When You’re Good to Mama,” “Mr. Cellophane,” and “Razzle Dazzle.”
This year’s production of Chicago is directed by Ms. Jennifer Sage. Dr. Thomas Birkner serves as the musical director. Mr. Nick Johnson is the choreographer. Mr. John Lodle is the technical director. The student directors are senior Dean Fults and junior Tyler Herron. The dance captains are senior Haley Procasky, senior Jennifer Riess, and sophomore Nathan Hirst. The student technical directors are seniors Cheyenne Alford and Nick Klein; juniors Jake Bernstein, Noah Murakami, and Aliyah Smith; and sophomore Nyemba Bryant.
Performances are at 7:00 each evening in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center, located at 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West. Tickets are $5 for students, $8 for adults, and $6 for senior citizens.
Belleville West Wins Follett Challenge Grant
The results of the Follett Challenge were announced on April 14, and Belleville West has a lot to celebrate. In this national contest, which included entries from more than 100 schools, Belleville West was named the winner of the high school category. West will now compete against the three other semi-finalists (the elementary school winner, the middle school winner, and the K-12 school winner) for the grand prize. The Belleville West video also won the top People’s Choice Award. Viewers voted for the BW video approximately 20,000 times—placing it more than 7,000 votes ahead of the next school. As winner of the high school category and the people’s choice, Belleville West will receive $35,000 in books and e-books for the BW Library. The Grand Prize Winner, which will be announced on May 16, will receive another $30,000 in books and e-books.
Thanks to all of the Belleville West students, parents, and friends who voted for our video during the month of March! You can watch the announcement of winners—and see the Belleville West video about our “Community of Readers” program—at this link: http://www.follettchallenge.com/.
Students Enjoy Ninth Annual Shakespeare Festival

Students also had the opportunity to compete in a Shakespearean trivia contest, to play games popular in Shakespeare’s time, to create masks and art projects, to learn about science in the sixteenth century, to sample recipes from the Renaissance, to write letters with quill pens, and to have their pictures taken with Shakespeare.
