BW English Students Surpass Fundraising Goal
Thanks to all the students who donated dollars, quarters, dimes, and nickels to the English department’s Love 146 campaign, Belleville West raised $1650 to help the victims of child trafficking and to end child exploitation around the world. We set a goal of $500 for this campaign, and students raised more than triple that amount. THANK YOU!
BW Theatre Stages CABARET this Weekend
The Belleville West Little Theatre will present its annual musical on Thursday through Saturday, April 30 through May 2. This year’s production is Cabaret.
The original production of Cabaret, which premiered on Broadway in 1966, won eight Tony awards, including Best Musical. The 1998 Broadway revival, starring Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson, took home another four Tony awards, including the prize for Best Musical Revival. This production was revived again on Broadway in 2014.
The scene is the Kit Kat Klub, a night club in Berlin, as the 1920s are drawing to a close. The Master of Ceremonies (senior Tyler Herron) welcomes the audience to the show. He assures them that, whatever their troubles, they will forget them at the cabaret.
Cliff (junior Nathan Hirst) is a young American writer traveling abroad. On the train to Germany, he meets Ernst (junior Alan Estrada), who invites him to the cabaret. There Cliff first encounters Sally Bowles (sophomore Rachel Deschine), a British singer who is down on her luck.
This popular musical features an award-winning score by John Kander and Fred Ebb. The show includes such memorable songs as “Wilkommen,” “Cabaret,” “Mein Herr,” “Maybe This Time,” and “The Money Song.”
This year’s production of Cabaret is directed by Ms. Jennifer Sage. Dr. Thomas Birkner serves as the musical director. Mr. Nick Johnson is the choreographer. Mr. John Lodle is the technical director. The student directors are seniors Allison Knapp, Courtney Pegg, and Aliyah Smith. The student technical directors are seniors Jake Bernstein and Noah Murakami and juniors Heather Holdman and Brandi Karbowiak.
For this production, the theatre is offering a limited number of special seats ON THE STAGE! These tickets are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. More information about the on-stage seating is available by emailing Mr. John Lodle at jlodle@bths201.org
Performances are at 7:00 each evening in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center, located at 4063 Frank Scott Parkway West. Tickets are $5 for students, $8 for adults, and $6 for senior citizens.

BW English Campaign for Love 146 Concludes this Week
Inspired by the Patricia McCormick book Sold, students in English classes at Belleville West are raising money for Love 146. This non-profit organization works to end child trafficking and exploitation around the world. Students are encouraged to “Give Change to Make a Change.” To view the short campaign video created by Mr. Nick Johnson’s IT Media class—or to donate to the cause—click HERE.
The fundraising drive for Love 146 runs through the end of this week.
English Students Enjoy Tenth Annual Shakespeare Bash
Belleville West students celebrated William Shakespeare’s birthday on Friday, April 17. The tenth annual BW Shakespeare Festival began in the school’s courtyard with scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, contemporary poetry inspired by Shakespeare, choral and instrumental music, and an updated version of Romeo and Juliet by members of Harambee. Students then moved to the library, where they tasted food based on Renaissance recipes, learned about science in Shakespeare’s time, created screen-printed images with members of the art department, studied Elizabethan weaponry, competed in trivia challenges about Shakespeare’s work, and played traditional Renaissance games.
Students Work Together to Better Their Writing
Students in Mrs. Story’s seventh hour English 3-4 class are working on peer editing of their argumentative research papers. They worked through a peer editing sheet that included such steps as highlighting certain parts of the essay, making productive and critical comments on the essay, and looking for the strongest and weakest supporting arguments. This activity provides students with the opportunity to discuss one another’s writing and to offer helpful criticism.
BW Student Newspaper Adds Podcast Feature

The student members collaborate to select topics, conduct interviews, record and edit the pieces.
