BW Students Win State Writing Awards
Each year, the Illinois Association of Teachers of English (IATE) sponsors a contest for student writers in middle school and high school. In this year’s “Best of Illinois Poetry and Prose” contest, three Belleville West seniors were awarded for their writing.
Sam Geiger is a first place winner in the prose category for his non-fiction piece “Finding My Voice.” Julia Rosenstengel is a runner-up in the prose category for her non-fiction piece “Goodbye to my Childish Ways.” Riley Wilson is the recipient of an honorable mention in the poetry category for her piece “What It Meant.”
Sam, Julia, and Riley will be featured in next fall’s IATE magazine. Congratulations!
Retiring English Teacher Featured in BND Article

BW Junior Receives Harvard Book Award
Junior Lydia Taylor was awarded the 2015-2016 Harvard Prize Book for Belleville West High School. The Harvard Prize Book program was established by Harvard alumni in 1910. The Prize Book is awarded to an outstanding student in the junior class who displays excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement in other fields.
BW Readers End Year with More Than 4.75 Million Pages
CONGRATULATIONS, BELLEVILLE WEST READERS! As the 2015-2016 school year draws to a close, each class has read more than one million pages of pleasure reading! Combined, the students at Belleville West read a grand total of 4,765,384 PAGES OF PLEASURE READING over the past nine months.
What does that mean?
If those pages were laid end-to-end, they would stretch almost 650 MILES—that’s all the way from Belleville West to Dallas, Texas!
If one person wanted to read that many pages, he or she would need to read one page every minute for MORE THAN NINE YEARS! Without ever stopping to eat or sleep!
If you had one penny for every page read by a Belleville West student this year, you would have $47,654!
How did the classes stack up against each other? The CLASS OF 2019 (the FRESHMAN class) read the greatest number of pages this year, but the CLASS OF 2018 (the SOPHOMORE class) read the greatest number of pages per student.
The CLASS OF 2019 (the freshman class) read 1,288,005 pages of pleasure reading this year. That’s an average of 2,496 pages per freshman.
The freshman classes with the highest reading totals for the sixth triad are:
Mrs. Hunter’s second hour – 26,652 pages
Ms. Thurnau’s first hour — 17,688 pages
Ms. Thurnau’s third hour – 15,443 pages
Mr. Schobert’s sixth hour – 15,296 pages
Mrs. Short’s second hour – 13,222 pages
Ms. Thurnau’s fifth hour – 12,288 pages
Ms. Loesche’s first hour – 11,423 pages
Ms. Loesche’s third hour – 10,801 pages
Ms. Thurnau’s sixth hour – 10,075 pages
The CLASS OF 2018 (the sophomore class) read 1,245,831 pages of pleasure reading this year. That’s an average of 2,516 pages per sophomore.
The sophomore classes with the highest reading totals for the sixth triad are:
Mr. Johnson’s first hour – 22,137 pages
Ms. Schloesser’s second hour – 13,155 pages
Mr. Johnson’s fourth hour – 12,903 pages
Mrs. Lewis’s fifth hour – 12,859 pages
Mrs. Lewis’s first hour – 12,631 pages
Mr. Reidelberger’s fourth hour – 10,599 pages
Mr. Reidelberger’s third hour – 10,220 pages
The CLASS OF 2017 (the junior class) read 1,162,563 pages of pleasure reading this year. That’s an average of 2,284 pages per junior.

Mr. Schobert’s third hour – 14,806 pages

The CLASS OF 2016 (the senior class) read 1,068,985 pages of pleasure reading this year. That’s an average of 2,344 pages per senior.
The senior classes with the highest reading totals for the sixth triad are:
Mr. Lodle’s sixth hour – 32,186 pages
Mr. Garland’s third hour – 20,791 pages
Mr. Schobert’s second hour – 13,415 pages
Mr. Reidelberger’s sixth hour – 12,683 pages
Ms. Thurnau’s seventh hour – 10,988 pages
Mr. Lodle’s fifth hour – 9,436 pages
Mrs. Story’s third hour – 9,623 pages
The ENGLISH TEACHERS read 14,557 pages in the sixth triad, for a total of 78,463 pages this year. (That’s 3,923 pages per English teacher.)

English Department Awards Two Scholarships
The BW English Department presented the school’s second annual English scholarship on Friday, May 6. The scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a college degree in an English-related field of study.
This year, the department opted to recognize two worthy candidates with scholarship awards. The recipients are Bailey Guinn and Julia Rosenstengel. Bailey plans to pursue studies in English and theatre. Julia plans to pursue a degree in secondary English education.

BW Library and Lit Magazine “Read It Forward”
The Belleville West Library and the Belleville West literary magazine, Page One, are promoting the joy of reading. Throughout the week of May 9 through 13, they are hiding 50 books throughout the school. The books are wrapped in newsprint and labeled “Read it Forward.” Any students who finds one of these books should read it and then pass it along to a friend, relative, or classmate.
Belleville West Celebrates Another Year of Reading
Belleville West held its annual Reading Celebration Day on Friday, May 6. Students attended a Skype session with author Natalie Haney Tilghman, shared their favorite books, and participated in book swaps. Drawings were held throughout the day for books, gift cards, and e-readers.
