Speech Team Scores Decisive Victory at Weekend Tournament
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team took first place at the Camelot Tournament in Peoria on Saturday, November 17. The team finished 165 points ahead of the second place competitors.

Book Club Students Discuss Contemporary Novel
Members of the Belleville West Book Club met on Wednesday evening to discuss Everybody’s Son by Thrity Umrigar. Students engaged in some deep conversation about the book and gave it unanimous praise. (And author Thrity Umrigar sent greetings to the students via Twitter!)
Freshman-Sophomore Play Postponed due to Weather
Due to the snow day, tonight’s performance of the Belleville West freshman-sophomore play, Bad Auditions by Bad Actors, has been cancelled. The performance is rescheduled for tomorrow—Friday, November 16—at 6:00 p.m. (Please note the earlier curtain time.) Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and children.
Little Theatre Spotlights Freshmen and Sophomores This Week
Belleville West Little Theatre presents this year’s freshman-sophomore show, the comedy Bad Auditions by Bad Actors, this Thursday, November 15. The performance begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Belleville West Performing Arts Center.

Throughout this year, Belleville West students are sharing their favorite books with the school. This week features recommendations from Mr. Brunner’s classes.
Student Book Club Meets this Week
The Belleville West Book Club will meet for discussion this Wednesday, November 14, from 4-5 p.m. Students will meet at The Abbey (located at 5801 West Main Street) to discuss Everybody’s Son. Any student who has read the book is welcome to attend.
EVERYBODY’S SON
During a terrible heat wave in 1991, ten-year-old Anton has been locked alone in an apartment for seven days, without air conditioning or a fan. Hot, hungry, and desperate, Anton shatters a window and climbs out. Cutting his leg on the broken glass, he is covered in blood when the police find him. Juanita, his mother, is discovered in a drug house less than three blocks away. Anton is placed with child services while Juanita goes to jail. The Harvard-educated son of a US senator, Judge David Coleman is desperate to have a child in the house again after the tragic death of his teenage son. David uses his power and connections to keep his new foster son, Anton, with him and his wife, Delores—actions that will have devastating consequences in the years to come.
Speech Team Members Earn Over 40 Awards at Latest Tourney
The Belleville West Speech and Acting Team claimed second place at the Benton SISAL Tournament on Saturday, November 10. Team members won more than 40 individual prizes.

Freshmen and Seniors Lead in Million Page Challenge
Once again this year, Belleville West students are reading! The BW English Department challenged the freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior classes to each read ONE MILLION PAGES of pleasure reading during this school year.
At the end of the second triad, the FRESHMAN CLASS has extended its lead, with 499,758 pages of pleasure reading—almost half of the goal! The freshmen read 293,318 pages in the second triad, an astounding average of 526 pages per freshmen. These freshman classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Mr. Garland—second hour: 1290 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—seventh hour: 1122 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—first hour: 946 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—sixth hour: 747 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—second hour: 709 pages per student
Ms. Thurnau—sixth hour: 671 pages per student
Mrs. Pettus—sixth hour: 596 pages per student
Mrs. Hunter—seventh hour: 520 pages per student
At the end of the second triad, the SENIOR CLASS is still in second place with 374,524 pages of pleasure reading—more than a third of the way to the goal! The seniors read 210,827 pages of pleasure reading in the second triad, an average of 450 pages per senior. These senior classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Ms. Thurnau—seventh hour: 1063 pages per student
Ms. Guebert—sixth hour: 834 pages per student
Mr. Lodle—sixth hour: 797 pages per student
Mrs. Lewis—first hour: 694 pages per student
Mrs. Short—first hour: 667 pages per student
Ms. Mims—fifth hour: 577 pages per student
Mrs. Lewis—fourth hour: 560 pages per student
The JUNIOR CLASS remains in third place, with 331,263 pages of pleasure reading. The juniors read 189,610 pages of pleasure reading in the second triad, an average of 378 pages per junior. These junior classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Ms. Guebert—first hour: 897 pages per student
Mr. Brunner—second hour: 768 pages per student
Mr. Brunner—sixth hour: 571 pages per student
Mr. Schobert—third hour: 560 pages per student
Mr. Brunner—third hour: 531 pages per student
Mr. Garland—sixth hour: 527 pages per student
The SOPHOMORE CLASS is still at the back of the pack, with 301,352 pages of pleasure reading. The sophomores read 149,191 pages in the second triad, an average of 320 pages per sophomore. These sophomore classes read the most pages per student in the second triad:
Ms. Schloesser—second hour: 796 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser—seventh hour: 790 pages per student
Ms. Schloesser—first hour: 511 pages per student
Ms. Ursani—second hour: 508 pages per student
The teachers in the ENGLISH DEPARTMENT read 16,826 pages in the second triad, an average of 841 pages per English teacher.
